Adguard+adguard vpn exposing my location to meta

Device: android adguard + adguard vpn, kill switch enabled, tried various server/dns

Service: Instagram & Facebook

App: original app, hermit, maki+, brave

Problem: Zuckerberg identifies me & my real location no matter how I configure my settings, like vpn server choice, spoofing user agent, switching language. However when I switched to invizible pro(tor+dnscrypt+l2p /nordvpn, meta couldn’t recognize me(with the same setting). Is there anything wrong with my adguard setting?

You have to go into adguard settings (not the VPN settings just adguard) and select to use a specific DNS (adguard, cloud flare, quad nine) then it will work as you expect. When you don’t specify the DNS it uses your isp DNS…kinda defeats the purpose.

App: original app

Because the app uses location services, not geoIP

Of course I have specified DNS. I have been using quad 9 DoH for years. I tried adguard dns DoQ, and cloudfare secure dns in this experiment, all of them failed as long as I’m connected via adguard+ adg vpn.

Then other browser based tests shouldnt have failed since they don’t have location permission

But the problem is, when I use nord/tor, meta can’t fingerprint me even with the same setup, that’s the issue.

No matter how I change the user agent, clearing cache, or even using fingerprint resistant browsers like brave, as long as I’m using adguard+adguard vpn, meta won’t even send me a warning email, and they always tell my location correctly.

Brave browser does

Browser doesn’t matter, as I have said, I have done the experiment, meta can’t recognize me when I route my traffic through tor/nord with whatever browser I mentioned above

When I use both together its inusable because I constantly get network disconnects. I wonder if you get that too and perhaps it “leaks” data .

You mean adg+adg vpn? Did you turn on Killswitch? Go to adguard GitHub issue tracker and search for “kill switch”. I managed to get things working, but I suspect that’s the source of data leak. Meta is the only company that identifies me tho

You can’t even access Instagram from tor browser, but orbot/invizible pro works

Yeah I know tor browser is more fingerprint resistant than stuffs like hardened Firefox/bromite/brave, but I want something usable in my daily life. Brave passed EFF fingerprinting test anyways.

More importantly, let’s not argue which browser is better. What matter here is with the same browser/webapp setup, meta can’t fingerprint me when I’m not using adguard, that’s the real issue here.

Even just the VPN I have internet instability but it’s much worst with both adguards activated. The VPN doesn’t drop though. It happens like every 5 to 10 seconds. Others have confirmed and I’ve seen the behavior on a couple different phone brands I have. Maybe unrelated but adguard team is aware and are not sure when it will be resolved.

Does that happen with other vpn that you used? Or have you tried netguard with socks5 proxy?
Have you setup private DNS in android setting? Just trying to rule out conflicting dns issue

Doesn’t happen with any other vpn. Nord, vpn unlimited, even my private qvpn works fine. Like I said others have confirmed adguard does this.

Sad to hear this, I might actually consider dropping out of adguard vpn at once, really disappointed with server choice& ping, the speed isn’t awful tho, but it’s unacceptable to have data leak. I also found it less problematic as an ex-user of nordvpn
