Hello guys,
I watch BBC IPLAYER on my iPad with NORDVPN active and working (i live in Italy so I need to use VPN)
When I try to cast, with AIRPLAY, BBC IPLAYER from iPAD to APPLE TV …nothing works!
I can’t understand if using VPN is the issue or BBC IPLAYER or what else?
Can you help me?
Thanks!
Thanks a lot guys for all your explanations! Now I have all the situation clear!
Adding more infos, with VPN on Disney + works like a charm with airplay
BBC iPlayer, even with downloaded video, does not work
As wrote by u/nlflint https://www.reddit.com/r/appletv/comments/w2ui2m/comment/igvn1tg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3"the AppleTV gets the stream directly from the BBC servers, not from your iPad The iPad is only acting like a remote control. BBC is probably blocking the AppleTV since it’s not on VPN. If can you configure you home router to put your whole home network on nord vpn, then it should work."
Right now my AppleTV is not under VPN, so is “georestricted”. The only way I have is to put APPLE TV under VPN with a router
BBC Iplayer, differently from Disney + (for example) is more severe with “georestriction”
I have used VyprVPN on my router so that all traffic comes from the VPN source instead of the original source.
I maybe saying something that’s technically wrong, but in my experience, when using a casting device such as Chromecast or AppleTV, the casting device will pull the content directly from the originator site, it won’t use your iPhone or iPad nor the VPN connection if any to get the content then play it except for specific scenarios such as playing videos or pictures stored in your device.
My guess is that unless the AppleTV is also behind the VPN, it won’t work.
Both the iPad and Apple TV must be on the same network. Can you use the ATV on the VPN also?
Have you tried AirPlaying your screen instead of from the app? It may or may not work cause DRM might block the screen when doing so. If it works, quality won’t be as good, but it could be serviceable. If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to put the ATV and maybe the iPad behind a box with the VPN configured on it, like this router. You can connect that router to your existing router so you don’t put your whole network behind the VPN (plus a travel router is not great as a home router).
Maybe it’s because you’re iPad is on VPN. It can’t talk to the AppleTV even though its on the same physical network, because iPad is on a virtual network in the UK.
Additionally, when airplaying content from streaming apps, the AppleTV gets the stream directly from the BBC servers, not from your iPad The iPad is only acting like a remote control. BBC is probably blocking the AppleTV since it’s not on VPN.
If can you configure you home router to put your whole home network on nord vpn, then it should work.
They have a blog with some tips on VPNing your whole home network: How to set up a VPN router [+Video] | NordVPN
I have a friend here in China with similar needs. He uses GL-iNet router with astrill with dedicated IP for additional USD 5/month on top of his annual astrill subscription. It works for him.
Thanks for this thread! Helped me solve an issue I had trying to watch the bbc iplayer and airplay to my Apple TV. The TLDR as has been alluded to, I needed both my iPad/iPhone and the Apple TV to be behind the VPN.
I had purchased the Slate AX travel router to try and get NFL Gamepass international to my Apple TV, which is haven’t quite got working…
But I did with the bbc. Just hooked both the Apple TV and my phone to the slate router, and it worked as expected.
Thanks a lot man!
I see in BBC iPlayer the button to AIRPLAY, but when I try to do it…nothing happens to APPLE TV…or better…video seems to start but immediately it comes back to ATV home screen
Don’t know for BBC iPlayer, but Disney+ work well like that.
US VPN on the ipad, airplay to the TV.
And you have all language and subtitles for all others country (like French voice, even if the movie is still on theatre here).
To explain “why ? It’s bad” situation, if you are not French : In France we have a law (no joke) who is the following : If a movie has been release in the Cinema, all VOD Services has to wait 2 Years before being able to put that on their catalog. Except one (Canal+) because this one “pay” half the French movie, and if they don’t have this law, then they will stop paying to produce movie.
But currently we have Disney who start playing asking to change this law or they will simply stop to put their movie on French Cinema, since they will be able to put the movie on Disney+ in 45 Days instead of 2 Years.
So it seem Disney allow that themself.
While BBC is more tricky and block that kind of stuff.
Since “normally”and for what I understand with Airplay, your IPAD sent the link to the video to your ATV. If the ATV can access to the link with no Geo Restriction, but if you don’t allow that (like BBC i guess) then it’s not working.
I remembered trying the bbc iPlayer with CHromecast at the time and I’ve god the issue - accessible with VPN on my computer but chromecast refuse the thing.
That is correct. There are some exceptions where it actually sends video e.g. like playing a video you downloaded to your phone.
