Hey redditors,
I currently have an AdGuard app on my mobile, which blocks ads by filtering traffic through its setvers, so it works as VPN. I use a free version, which only filters browser traffic (no app traffic).
Should I install Tailscale - won’t it conflict with AdGuard? I plan to use Tailscale with only limited range of apps (e.g. nzb360 or Stremio). Can I force Tailscale somehow to only work with these apps? (if not - shall it slow down the traffic from/to my mobile?)
Thank you!

could go self hosted - run adguard home or pihole as DNS blockers for ads, put tailscale on the same device as one of those, and set your tailnet DNS as the tailnet IP of that device. my phone only connects to my tailscale network and gets adblocking through pihole anywhere.
Are you talking about this app?
Proprietary VPN protocol
The one thing that is concerning about the link above is this line ^
won’t it conflict with AdGuard?
If you are talking about the app above then it probably will
It depends. In most cases, you can’t use Tailscale alongside other VPNs.
If its not the app in question, can you post a link to what app you are use excactly?
What is the main goal of the adguard/your use case?
As far as I know you can only use one VPN at a time. So you’ll have to toggle between them.
I also find this annoying (I generally run Google One VPN and then have to toggle it off and toggle on tailscale whenever I want to access my tailnet. tailscale has Mulvad integration as an exit node, but work wifi blocks access to mulvad servers. I think I could figure out some way to send things through an exit node I configure that routes between tailnet and some VPN but I haven’t had time to figure all that out yet.
As already mentioned you can only have one vpn app active. If you have root you can run Adguard in proxy mode. Then you can use both at the same time.
Are you talking about this app?
No, this one. [just found out the FAQ on that page actually answers my question of this thread, haha!] They have several in their portfolio, incl. AdGuard VPN that you mentioned, which is VPN (duh!). Mine is AdGuard Adblock, which like I said filters traffic through their servers, hence - acts (afaik) as a VPN. So it’s been years that I use it to block ads and honestly I don’t want any other solution. Just want to know if Tailscale can sit on the same device.
That’s a good point regarding proxy mode - they do have it, right. Noted, thank you!
Looks like you have experience with AdGuard. Does it blocks ads even better in proxy mode? What are the benefits for running it on route device (apart from eliminating potential conflict with Tailscale)?
