Anyone know the story of this tunnel in Redcliffe?

Does it lead into the caves? When was it built? Was is just for storing ship-brought cargo?

It was part of the harbour railway. A line rain from temple meads all the way along to where the line is at the industrial museum. Went over the bridge by the create centre and joined back up where the Portishead branch is/the old maintenance yard

Henry the train is in there, hiding from the rain

Bristol Harbour Railway - if you have a look on Know Your Place you can trace it out on various maps over the years (first appears on 1874 Ashmead map)

It was a freight tunnel that lead to temple meads. There was an via duct that ran between the middle of the two derelict buildings

Where is that? I’ve never seen that before.

It used to go to Temple meads.

It was a railway line, now it’s not, think there was a night club in there at some point.
Certainly been a quite a few illegal raves in there!

Is Banksy’s house

I know who lives in the place above with the circle window as well because they put it on their Instagram story, walked past this last week and and I was like ohh damn with the tunnel underneath too!

It was supposedly part of Brunels original line. A broad gauge connection to the docks from temple meads

Is a good resource to see where old lines ran: Rail Map online - historic railways, railroads and canals

His new paint job is still looking fantastic though

thanks for the KYP link. On the map I see it comes out the other side of mary redcliffe - this is still visible right?

Did you really type that about your browser or is Brave injecting that into your clipboard?

Amazing, thanks for sharing. Very creepy but also v interesting.

Down next to Ostrich.

I’ve never been down there, but the segment of brick wall on Pump Lane looks like it lines up with the tunnel. Zooming in through the railings it looks like the ground still goes down to where the track bed would have been and hasn’t been filled in, so I imagine the eastern portal of the tunnel is still visible there yeah.
