Brave is safe or not?

I love Brave until I found out about some sus things they did. Like installing VPN without user’s approval or crypto related things. Would like to know is it safe to use our should I stay away? My main browser has been Firefox for many many years until it started to not work properly. It’s slow to load websites and sometimes will even timeout. No such problem with chrome, edge or brave. Switched to brave a year ago and like it a lot.

Really like Brave’s AdBlock feature that works better than ublock. it’s fast and have minor stuff that is pleasant to use. So, is it safe to use Brave?

Ps. Trying out Vivaldi now but still prefer Brave.

The VPN was never active unless the user paid for it. The issue was really overblown. It was installed as a service “just in case” and actually removed in subsequent releases.

Every browser has their pros and cons. By default you can trust Brave way more than Firefox. Brave have done some controversial things in the past, but they didn’t compromise user privacy or security. But I think they learned their lesson since then.

Firefox have in recent updates added more tracking in their browser, but they get more slack just because they are the only Chromium alternative.

If you are ultra paranoid about privacy, then just use LibreWolf. But if you just want a browser that is fast, reliable and has great privacy out of the box, then Brave is probably the best option. Brave has many features a lot of people don’t use, but they are all opt-in (off by default). I don’t use most of the features and have just hidden the icons, and I haven’t been bothered ever since.

But in the end just use what you prefer.

Brave has better privacy settings than Vivaldi but I still kinda prefer Vivaldi because the mobile version has features that I have wanted for so long in a mobile browser

I’ve noticed Brave’s approach to privacy is a step up from many mainstream browsers, but it’s not without its issues. I think it’s a solid choice for those concerned about tracking, but I’m keeping an eye on its development to make sure it continues to live up to its privacy promises.

Brave browser is completely free and open source; which is a fork of another free and open source browser engine Chromium:

https://github.com/brave/brave-core

If your main browser was Firefox you can look into Zen Browser, still in beta but I’ve been using it as my daily driver and it works great.

It’s safe. But before moving try a fresh profile of Firefox and see if the issues you mentioned persist.

safe for what? safe as in your history isn’t entirely leaked? partially only.
safe as in anonymous? not at all

totally safe, been using brave for 4 years

I would not trust Brave, it comes with SafeBrowsing and telemetry

You can turn off the crypto and other options. It’s safe.

If you want Chromium engine AdBlock of Brave is so much better than uBlock Lite on Google Chrome.

This is basically a brave shill sub (esp bc how reddit voting system fosters echo chambers) just look how you got downvoted for valid questions lol

Also look how the answers deflect, basically its
“way out of proportion but yeah”
“yeah brave bad but mozilla bad so you might as well”
“no browser gives you privacy so you might as well”
“yeah but look, open source! bc no malware or cve has ever been in open source”

its not under gdpr but its safe

I believe that if you are one of my preferred browsers, but yes, it is necessary to use it. If u need known how to manage https://browserfy.net/index.php/2024/12/18/how-to-manage-your-browsing-history-in-brave/

If you’re asking this, you aren’t brave enough to use brave.

Is it safe? Yes. Do they have a history of shady practices? Also yes. Will they do something shady again? Most likely.

Do with that what you will.

You’re not safe with brave.
Run.

This should give a good idea

Ironically, I am positing this from Brave lol
