My wife will be traveling to visit family in a few weeks and be behind the GFW.
In the past, I’ve run a SoftEther server from home and been able to use it. But it’s been a few years and I have seen spome info about it being upgraded. Does anyone know if the current version of SoftEther is still a good option?
As an alternative, and potentally faster option, I have a PIA account. Does anyone know if that works and how risky it might be for her to use it?
I’ve seen other VPN suggestions but I want to check on the tools I already have available first.
We just released a new tool Wallpunch that reliably circumvents GFW. Apps are available for iOS/Mac/Android/Windows and we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. If you’re interested I can give you a discount code for new signups as well.
Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, I’m asking about a self hosted SoftEther server (specefically version 4.42) and not a commercial VPN service.
Is that no longer effective against the GFW?
I used mullvad in June/July when I was there and it worked fine. iOS works out of the box but sometimes you need to refresh Android until you get an obfuscated server (3 digit server number) or use their shadowsocks proxy
Hmm, its kinda hard to get straight answers on SoftEther. I was reading about the updates to the GFW made in the last couple years, but on the other hand there was a new SoftEther release a month ago and reading about th eVPN Gate project, it seems like it might be hard to tell what version of the server is running on an IP a user is trying to connect to.
I’m trying to read through what I can on xray-core. Unfortunatly, the documentation is really sparse and I’m not finding a lot of tutorials on how to set up the server.
