Can Protonvpn shut off router completely?

I’m very new to using a vpn other than something really basic and free and now am using proton after it being recommended to me. I cant seem to find any answers online either and I’m sorry if it’s a dumb question but when using proton and downloading, my whole internet will disconnect to my router, and nothing connected to it will work in the house such as phones or anything streaming. With xfinity they have said everything is fine when I’ve called before, and whenever I have proton off and am not using it, the router doesn’t have any issues.

Just so I understand what you’re saying:

  1. My internet works fine with Proton off.
  2. My internet works fine with Proton on. I can search, get new email, surf the internet, watch videos.
  3. My internet does NOT work with Proton on and I begin downloading.

True or false to each. What are you downloading? Does this happen with general downloading like if you were dl/ling a common app like Google Chrome or from Windows Store OR is it only occurring when you’re using a P2P application?

If it’s happening at the router level then you should check for things like a security Killswitch, P2P traffic blocking, check parental controls or built-in security features meant to kill the internet when it perceives a threat. If you’re behind someone else’s router or network they may be intentionally killing your connection using same features. What brand router is this?

Also this may sound odd but pull the adapter out of the wall and plug it back in. Does the adapter seat snuggly in the plug (i.e. it doesn’t wiggle)? If not, you may need to bend the prongs outwardly a bit. If you replaced the factory adapter you also have to make sure bought the correct voltage replacement.

Thanks for the reply! Essentially, what happens is nothing works for home internet whenever I’m doing P2P downloading using bittorrent client and protonvpn. It gets to the point where my router fails to have any lights on for the 2.4, 5ghz, and just the online light in general either stays on, or flickers, to indicate an issue. However whenever the kill switch is off, and the P2P has been paused, everything lights up on the router again. It’s a 2 in 1 router/modem from my ISP if that helps either. I have my own router but never went thru the steps of setting it up whenever I moved a few years ago.

It’s the number of connections you are making that is shutting down your router. Limit the amount of connections.

Ideally you really need a better router. This shouldn’t be a problem for any modern decent router.

Go into your application and slow down the download/upload speed. Crank it to the minimum or halfway. Try downloading again. If it works then somehow you’re overworking your router. If it dies again then something is intentionally blocking it. If it’s the latter then tell what model modem-router it is. I might be able to find its manual online (if you don’t already know it).

It’s a piece of shit that I got back in 2020, I had a really nice one for gig internet at my old house but now I didn’t have a use for it until recently when good internet moved into the area. Do you have a recommendation on a good number? Global max was 200 but I set that to 50 and then 50 again for max number of peers per torrent. I also changed max upload to 500kbs and max download to 10,000kbs as my speed tests around 300mbs with a speed test tool. My router has stayed on, however I’m getting no download speeds at all now, which could just be from the torrent itself but I was getting a couple mbs a second prior to trying to figure out what’s going on now. But again router has stayed on this whole time so progress

Awesome thanks so much! I’ll give that a try and reply with another update, it probably won’t be for a few hours where I can get by my computer again. I do have upload speed capped at 500kbs right now but nothing for downloads. I really appreciate the reply.
