Cannot download Mac client of free VPN software on Safari or Chrome

My Fortinet client on a new Mac mini was disconnecting from time to time during the day, so I wanted to try a clean install. Neither Safari nor Chrome (latest versions of each, Mac OS 12.6 Monterey) codlin download the installer. In each case, it stalled after just 67K. I had to reinstall from an installer I had previously put in the Trash.

Anyone have any guesses as to 1) why I cannot download the installer from the product downloads website (linked here) and 2) why the VPN connection would randomly drop every hour or two during the day? This was not a situation where it was idle and then disconnected. Sometimes I am actively typing and then I don’t have a connection anymore, and have to disconnect the Remote Desktop connection as well as the Fortinet one.

Tried from a different network?

I just downloaded the latest free one for Mac from here. no issues with the download

Great question got me thinking. I tethered my Mac Mini to my iPhone LTE connection and still had a problem, so ruled out the network. But then I tried it on my MacBook Air and it worked. So we have a machine-specific issue. I am going to try uninstalling Avast and will report back. Thanks.

Sure thing. Any weird ass obscure issue like this has been at the machine level or network boundary level (firewall) for me so testing from a different machine and/or network are great next steps.

OK, so I un-installed Avast Security (the MacBook Air does not have it, and the download worked), and the download worked in Chrome but not in Safari. But I was able to do the download. I’m going to take a guess for now that Avast was playing havoc with the VPN connection in some way, but anyone else’s experience is welcome. Thanks all!
