Connect to home vpn on dd-wrt router using a dd-wrt router in a different location

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how my make my location appear as though I am working in a certain state using a company computer. I cannot install vpn software on this computer or change settings that require admin privileges. I have family in the desired state that would let me setup a router running a PPTP or openVPN server.

My primary questions are:

What are some things to consider when setting up the router in the state that I want my IP to come from? I’m going for minimal maintenance so my mom (for instance) doesn’t have to do anything to the router. This guide seems pretty straightforward https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-router-vpn-using-dd-wrt/

Additionally, the thing I can’t get an answer for via googling: how can I access this personal VPN using a dd-wrt router? All of the instructions I’ve come across are for accessing it through a computer or phone. It seems like there should be fields in the “client” section of the VPN tab of the ddwrt setup to do this.

Thank you for any help that can be provided

Well this can be achieved fairly easy.

I’m on mobile so excuse my short response:

Get a pi and install piVPN and connect it Ethernet and make sure you enable SSH in case you need to do anything while away.

Then make a profile for you and import that file into the DDWRT and do a kill switch on it so it won’t pass internet on if it’s not connected to your moms house.

Then your router will just give you an IP but anywhere on the internet you go it will show as if you are at your moms house.
