Hi all, I was looking into Sling, but to get the Jadeworld package ($30/month), it’d cost $70 because I’d need a basic package as well. My goal is to get Cantonese dramas for her to zone out with; she has extremely limited ability to use a remote. A tablet or computer is out of the question. Any ideas?
If she’s okay with not seeing live programming, you could set up YouTube on Chromecast with a remote. That’s what I’ve done for my parents. I created a YouTube account for them and followed some Cantonese programming channels. They don’t spend a lot of time watching TV, though.
I got my parents a “Chinese tv box”. You can Google them. It comes with live TV and my parents maneuver between different channels using the remote it comes with. The one I have makes me pay an annual fee of 70 bucks though. It’s worth it imo for the easy user interface my parents can navigate through

TVB Anywhere app has a catalog of the Cantonese dramas. There’s two versions of the app, one is with Chinese subtitles and the other has it with English subtitles.
TVB Anywhere. Tried the Sling package before but their UI /text data are in English. Not very user friendly for elderly folks.
I believe they have an tv box option too? I’m using an android tv box which has the app installed instead. A little bit more cumbersome to start but not too difficult.
I know you asked about TV, but the most elderly-friendly Cantonese entertainment is to get a digital internet radio device (I can recommend Grace Digital). I got one for my grandmother and set it to a Canto station based in NYC, and it gets her music, news, radio dramas, etc. She has it on almost all the time and only has to adjust the volume knob. No complicated remotes, menus, or eye strain, and she enjoys listening while laying down. Before committing to a dedicated device, you can check out a station’s live stream and see if she’d like it. Search from the app store “TVB anywhere” should be a blue background. The app has what you are looking for.

i know there r a lot of tv box has preinstalled some app for watch tv(they use their server recored the tv and share it over the network ) .

I’ve been looking for a good solution as well. Currently I have the sling package stand-alone just 30 something dollars I think. We currently have an older Amazon fire stick with the sling app. It’s a little cumbersome but I have been able to teach my elderly father how many clicks to get into the app.
I do however wish there was something easier where we can still access those same channels but an easier interface or something where he can just turn on and scroll through the channels. Not sure if anyone else has experience with any other streaming devices and know if those are easier?
That’s a great idea! I see whole TV series saved as playlists on Youtube. I’m going to find the ones with the most amount of crying, yelling, shaming, and suicide attempts and my mom will be happy. Thanks!
What are the choice YouTube channels for dramas?
I’ve not seen that before, thanks for the heads up! I’m looking at the interface and am not sure my mom can handle it. I’ve taped off her DVD controller to just power, play, and stop; she mashes each button until she gets something on screen.

My mom used to listen to Sinocast and still has the radio, but we get really crappy over the air reception. I like this idea, I can get a dedicated internet radio and pre-load it with Cantonese channels, so she can press physical buttons, like she’s used to. Thanks!
The person on the phone said I’d need both, but she did not seem to be all that knowledgeable. Did you call in your subscription or do it entirely online?
A family relative recently gave me a 360 TV Box, it has an impressive amount of content, but I realize my mom’s not of the “on demand TV” type, she prefers to turn on a TV and see what’s on.
There’s the Three Kingdoms dubbed in Cantonese on YouTube. It’s 90 something episodes long and my dad has watched that a few times already. I’m not sure if your mom will like it or not though. TVB has drama, variety shows, and mystery channels on YouTube. They’re mostly all the older series. They’re not geoblocked. If you have a smart TV, you can add YouTube to the TV and you don’t need the Chromecast.
Have you tried a tablet and setting up the default language as Chinese? I find my parents find that easier to navigate the device if they can read all the controls. Also you can set up Siri to understand Cantonese, so if
you speak to her in Cantonese and she responds back.
