Any recommendations for the fastest VPN service for the Bay Area, with fast local servers that are not overloaded? Speed is the first consideration, would like to max out my gigabit connection, but other considerations would be WireGuard support and a reasonable price.
You aren’t going to max out gige on a vpn, even with wireguard. I suggest setting up striesand on Azure or AWS in this region, they both offer trial accounts, or setting up a colobox at HE in Fremont. I think Linode also has service in Fremont.
I can vouch for PIA, they have a silicon valley server and a California server, you can see bandwidth here https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/network/
Now, they’re the only VPN I’ve ever used so I can’t say much, but I will say the silicon valley server is fine 99% of the time, I can video call and stream 100% fine with it. My house gets 180 mbps, and I get those speeds just fine.
This is an interesting point - two questions. I tried Algo - any reason you recommend Streisand? Also, I remember (although I might have misconfigured) that I got charged for bandwidth, specifically egress fees - any tips to make sure AWS/Azure bill not too high?

I like Streisand because it works on a bunch of cloud services and sets up a suite of vpn services. Lots of click to install.
You have to set billing alerts to let you know you are blowing your transfer cap. It happens on linode both ways! You can always check out lowendtalk if you need to keep things cheap.
Careful, they have fallen out of favor with the privacy crowd in recent years…I believe because they were purchased by a VPN conglomerate that has an iffy track record. Search around reddit for more details if this is a concern of yours.
