Forgot to close Qbittorrent before turning off VPN

After downloading a movie I got distracted and forgot to close out Qbittorrent before I turned off my VPN since I couldn’t access a site with it on (I just now learned about binding qBittorrent to the VPN). About 40 minutes later I realized that I was still seeding what I downloaded. However it showed that no one was downloading it and the data/speed lines were flat. Do I have anything to worry about? (Please spare any sarcastic comments. I’m worried about this.)

Hey flatman

Did u at least have the fuckin qbit bound to the VPN? If so u prolly ok

If not ur prob gettin the lectric chair son

Y’all need to read the pinned post on r/vpntorrents and learn how to bind your qbit to your VPN - you’ll never worry about this ever again. Forget about kill switches or other nonsense. Bind bind bind

lol I updated my VPN last week and it turned off the tethering and I didn’t realize it. I realized it after about 40 seconds, I was downloading, and I got the DMCA notice in my email in under a minute. I think this is the third I’ve gotten in the last 5 years when I’ve been lazy and had VPN leaks, there have been zero consequences.

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Go directly to jail.

Was it a popular or new release? An older movie that’s been around for years I would hope they wouldn’t care as much about.

why are you worried about it? im asking for real

I have been torrenting movies for the last two decades without a vpn (although private trackers normally) and nothing has ever happened so I think you’re fine lol

We need a bot that just comments the pinned post about binding your client

Before learning about the ability to “bind” qBittorrent to your VPN network interface connection, I would run into this very same accidental mistake on my part a few times where I would run my torrent app while forgetting to turn on my VPN service first, and the last two times it happened, i got notices from my ISP to the point where I had my internet service deactivated for between 4 hours and 12 hours before it would be reinstated. This was done by a US ISP.

So definitely “bind” your torrent app to your VPN connection (if it has that functionality), as well as only use a VPN service which has a Kill Switch function, and doesn’t have DNS leaks and/or WebRTC leaks. The more features you have to protect yourself the better.

What country does this?

Yes, it was a new release, unfortunately.

I was worried about potential legal action or fines. Also, I’m not the account holder and I don’t want to get them in trouble either.

I live in the United States, but it’s not the country that’s doing it. The copyright holder can sue my internet service provider for allowing the piracy of their copyrighted material, so the notice comes from my internet service provider, who will threaten to turn off my internet, and if I do it too often, will turn it off before they get sued.

if you torrent copyrighted material in the clear in the United States, your account with your internet service provider will get canceled before you do enough to trigger legal action.

if you live in western country there should be no problems. been pirating since 2015. No ISP calls.

Total upload: 5 Terabits.
Total download: 3 Terabits.

Do you know if countries in asia or europe are that nosy??

That’s good to hear. I’m in the US.

I live in Eastern Europe and i never used torrents with a VPN🙂

I live in Poland and uploaded dozens of TB via torrent without vpn, never got any problems. Torrenting since 2000s

The US is definitely an exception.
