I have this daily issue where my phone is saying it’s connected to either my WiFi or my data plan, but I only realise it isn’t when I check my notifications and the Google one VPN shows a warning stating that ‘your connection may not be secure, VPN is trying to connect’ or something along those lines. It’s then I notice I don’t have internet.
I’ve tried disconnecting the WiFi / data and reconnecting, and tried disconnecting the VPN and reconnecting but the only way for me to resolve is to restart the phone. It happens multiple times per day and is quite frustrating. I thought the latest software update would fix but it seems not.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Yes, saaaaame. toggling airplane mode on/off seems to work for me briefly.
Force stop the Google One app to fix it.
For some reason the VPN gets stuck trying to reconnect sometimes on spotty signals. It’s a real pain.
I just stumbled upon this thread while searching if anyone else is struggling with Google One VPN making your everyday life miserable whilst active.
I’m not a Google Pixel user, but I’m taking it as a reason to emphasize that the issue is most likely in the Google One VPN as a service, not necessarily related to your device. I’ve been using this VPN in both my personal and work iPhones (13 & 13 Pro Max) and have faced issues similar to what is described here.
If I’d have to guess, it (the VPN) struggles to handle the mobile network changing from 4G to 5G connection, as I’m mostly experiencing the disconnects while I’m away from home. I’m never using any public WiFi or even using the phone’s setting to try and connect to nearby hotspots if available.
And so, the Google One VPN drops the internet connection when…
- …I’m inside of a grocery store, where it’s difficult to maintain a strong 5G signal.
- …I’m driving outside the city, passing some countryside - again, where it’s difficult to maintain a strong 5G signal.
- …I’m coming home and my phone is swapping to my home WiFi - this is an understandable and predictable behavior from the VPN.
- …I’m spending a day at home, and I have enabled the setting of switching between WiFi and mobile network for best performance. In this occasion, it doesn’t lose the connection too often, but it’s still on a semi-regular basis and just like the previous point, this is understandable and predictable.
To get rid of this absolutely terrible side-feature, I have now followed the suggestions on this thread and disabled the VPN from automatically turning on. It’s very frustrating to try and check your shopping list/recipe/product information while you’re at the store and the connection just keeps going on and off, repeatedly.
Thanks, and let us hope that Google is able to overcome these impairing issues with their service at some point in the near future. This kind of takes away from the total value of the Google One subscription, when one of the core features isn’t really usable.
I’m having the same issue. I’ll be using Google one VPN on Pixel 7 and it the VPN will stop and say “trying to reconnect” and when it does this I have no internet access. The Google one app completely freezes and won’t even let me stop the service or do anything at all with the app. I have to force close the app through settings to be able to restore any network connection at all. So frustrating. Google pleas fix this!
I’m having the same issue on a MOTO G5 5g Plus. Interestingly my wife’s Pixel 6a is ok.
We both use the same WiFi and O2 mobile data provider and are together most of the time. Issue only happens on my phone. I force stop Google 1 to get things working.
Now I have switched off Google 1 VPN and only turn on when on an open WiFi.
If this is not fixed soon I will be dumping Google 1 as Google do not respond to my logs on the issue.
I do experience this, however not multiple times a day. I might have it happen once or twice a week, maybe less. I do restart my phone frequently though, so maybe that’s why.
Apparently, the VPN client kill switch is being activated (which is working by design). Something on your device is triggering the kill switch. My P7P automatically switches between WiFi and mobile networks depending upon my current location. My guess is that the kill switch is being triggered when your device attempts to switch networks automatically.
The workaround is to disable automatic network switching. Alternatively, you can disable the VPN. I only use a VPN when I’m connected to a public network. Otherwise, I don’t bother
I have tried all of the recently suggested steps, nothing seemed to have worked, I read someone’s post about kill switch. I realized I have MSdefender installed with a VPN. I deleted the MSdefender VPN profile and now GoogleOne VPN works consistently. Might be worth looking into if you have multiple VPN profiles installed.
I always forget that might be a reason why my internet connection might be going wonky…
I can’t say I’ve ever had this issue. Could be issues with reception maybe?
Same since the last update. I reset the Internet connection.
I’ve been experiencing this since they announced it was free so I just turned it off and went with another one(the free 1.1.1.1) … No issues with that
I’ve had this issue since I had my phone, always thought my Phone or my Internet Provider was the issue, until my girlfriend told me today it might be a VPN issue. I always thought the internet problems would cause the VPN to fail, not the other way around. Always had to restart my phone too and it was annoying af. I turned VPN off now and I’ll try and see if the issue is resolved then. Would suck to lose the VPN but if I can use my phone again I’ll gladly waive it.
Hey, i don’t know if you’re still having this issue or not but i managed to get it back working, but how i fine it was a little unorthodoxed.
I created a new Google account, then in Google one, i did the family share option with the newly created account. Then logged into Google one with the new account and turned on the vpn. Viola magnifico. It works now.
Try it and see if you have the same results. If so, then it has something to do with something on our main accounts. But I’m not sure what. But so far it is working great!
It’s this. I have issues with it when on the move and wifi/mobile hand-off. When I hold still it’s fine.
As such I only turn it on intentionally when on public wifi.
Thank you! Force stopping and restarting Google One is the only thing that worked!
Update on above.
I have disabled in settings …( Something like ). Do not connect if Internet lost until VPN reconnects.
Have now gone 24 hrs of use and testing with no failures.
It appears Google 1 does not reconnect properly if Internet lost! May be when losing WiFi to switch to Mobile Data!
Google please fix because when out I have to remember to check VPN is working ok before using an Open insecure WiFi.
Reception is good when it happens, WiFi signal is good too
