Has anyone here installed the Astrill router applet recently?

Been using Astrill PC and phone app in China for years and recently want to install the router applet. Has anyone here successfully installed the Astrill router applet recently? Could you please share your router model and firmware version?

I put it on a GL-AR150 a few years ago, and I’m still using it. I’m travelling internationally without it right now… but from memory I’m using the 44715 DD-WRT build.

Works well. I have three or four preferred servers for connection, and enable the option to reconnect to another preferred server if disconnected. Every week or so, if it starts getting slow I’ll re-scan the available servers and update the list of preferred, if needed.

I filter ‘local’ sites so that Taobao, WeChat etc work normally.

I update the applet and server list whenever I update my preferred server list.

It’s been solid as a rock, the only challenge these days is finding an Ethernet outlet to plug it into.

I’ve done it recently on an Asus router. Don’t know why you need my specs, lol. You just have to follow the instructions on their website, it takes about five minutes.

If you haven’t installed Merlin yet, it’s surprisingly easy and quick.

I’m my opinion it’s the best option for using Astrill at home. Great options for customization and very stable and reliable.

If 3 months ago is recent enough for you, then I did on an RT-AC86U. Pretty easy.

Works fine for what I need it for (using a Meta Quest 2 for VR), but when I connect some other devices it says “no internet”. I haven’t tried to sort that out because my other devices normally connect to a different router and then just use the app for VPN.

I just tried re-installing the applet the last two days because I thought my router was having issues with the server connection. The DDNS keeps saying it’s “waiting to be verified,” and the ASTRILL VPN tab never fully loads. Has anyone else bumped into this? Everything works fun until I run the SSH command line.

Don’t do it. It’ll mess up your whole network.

Thank you! It’s really helpful!

er. Don’t know why you need my specs, lol. You just have to follow the instructions on their website, it takes about fi

Astrill’s manual specifies dozens of Asus models, and says only these models are supported. But they are very old models. I also hear some users say any Merlin model will work. So I’m confused. I want to know a router model+firmware version combo that actually works recently. Will save me a lot of time and trouble XD

My android phone connection says “connected without internet” but the connection is fine. Contacted Astrill but they couldn’t figure it out.

Did you find a solution?

Thank you! I bought an AC86U, flashed the applet and it worked. I connected my phone and Apple TV to it and worked, too. Don’t have to suffer those shitty VPN apps on Apple TV anymore.

About two years ago I used a DD-WRT router, but some day the applet page became blank. Couldn’t figure out why, and Astrill customer support didn’t know how to help.

Glad to know the applet supports Merlin router and my Apple TV is now useful again

The exact same thing is happening to me right now. Are you able to connect and share your experience of how you went around it? I have reset my router, reinstalled the merlin software, and now when trying to install i just cant connect via SSH. Would really appreciate hearing from you if you have time at all. Am in Beijing.

I use a dedicated router for the applet. So I think it’d be fine.

Don’t listen to this. You can select which devices go through VPN and which don’t if you want.

Ah, I see. Are you referring to this page?

I set up my VPN on an RT-AC86U and it works like a charm. That’s one of the recommended routers and it’s pretty solid.

I don’t use it enough to try to sort it out (only for connecting my Meta Quest), and it gets by for what I need for as it. But you could try switching protocol (UDP/TCP), locations, reinstall the applet, etc. Sometimes those things have helped things run a bit smoother.

It’ll work as well, but I suspect the pro version is “better” - I just don’t know what the specific differences are.
