Help, Using my personal computer at school?

Hi, If I have my own computer that I bought myself, and I take that computer with me for school and I sign in to the schools wifi on guest mode (on my chromebook), will they see everything on my computer? Like I know they will see what I do on guest mode I guess and on the school account, but will they see / get access to my information on my personal account just because I used their wifi?

This computer is not owned by the school, and I wasnt on my personal account, I used guest mode and signed in to the schools wifi thru guest mode.

Its possible but I highly doubt it. All they’ll be able to see is your internet activity. They’d have to have some sort of security client (or malware) installed on your laptop to see anything else. You should be fine. Having said that, you might want to avoid doing bringing your personal laptop to school for a variety of reasons.

If you just use the schools WiFi and don’t use the schools user account that was given to you, you will be safe. They might be able to track the internet traffic. I work in IT and we support some schools, and I tell you, when the school has their dedicated “it team” which are usually teachers that barely know how to turn on a pc, these schools are set up with the bare minimum.

If a school uses MS 365 for example, most of the times these tenancies are just set up to the extent that they work, and do what they’re supposed to. I didn’t see a single school that logs Teams chats etc or tampered with the default privacy settings that would allow you to see who uploaded which file to a certain SharePoint etc.

In my opinion you’re safe to use your PC, and I highly doubt they will be able to see anything relating to your pc but your IP and Mac address haha

If you use a vpn, they can’t see any of your network traffic.

they SAY they only see what happens on school internet but please do not trust it.

They can see what websites you visit, but that’s about it. They can’t see any of the contents of your computer, or even what links you browse on the websites you visit. They can just see you visited google, youtube, pornhub, bankofamerica, whatever. They can’t see which video you watched or how much you spent on it.

That is, assuming your computer is normal. If your computer has malware on it, they very well may notice, not really because they can look inside your computer, but because they can see what it does, and malware sometimes does specific things that can be identified.

It’s also worth noting that they probably can’t tell who you are. They can see what the computer is doing, but if that computer has never been logged in to your school google account, and there’s no special registration process to get on the guest wifi, then they don’t know the computer is YOUR computer. They just know it is A computer doing xyz.

If you use a VPN you should be fine, OpenVpn, or Nord VPN, also use Brave browser with private window & DuckDuckGo. :ok_hand:

Tip: beware of using TOR, network admins can see that you’re using it

Okay, so I need a seperate chromebook for school and one for home ?

This man is drunk on power. The nerd equivalent of a gym teacher.

Oh ok, yeah I wont do personal stuff while signed in to the school account, just feel uneasy about the fact that i used the schools wifi on my personal computer and idk if that can lead to the school getting info about my personal stuff on my device and on my personal account . i dont know anything about computers and privacy so yeah…

You may also experience safe search issues and a few other things such as not being able to sign into certain websites even without a school count.

i dont understand?? Like will this happen if I use the schools wifi?
