Man how are you gonna show up to every post just to complain. I would say get a hobby but I guess this is it for you?
Probably he meant 60TB. Look at other posts he has sent with the same equipment.
You have 24/7 access if whole rack, otherwise someone will have to come with you.
indeed, just boring attitude. Whatever atleast we are happy ![]()
Dudes advice is mostly wrong yet his profile makes him look like a professional, blocks you when you tell him he should learn more about what he’s talking about only to produce himself a echo chamber because now nobody can tell him he’s wrong when he blocks you all from being able to reply to his “helpful suggestions” he needs to be banned.
me a liar, i feel some need to proove i dont. Why would i even lie on a homelab forum to begin with? What is it to lie about? Just fun to share a project ive been working with and put alot of energy on.
Hifive from me too!
What do you run that requires such a high power drain?
I’ve always had my eye for on HE.net. Just seems like they’re a solid choice. Their website could use some love, but I don’t care too much about that.
Most non enterprise switches don’t in fact…
Don’t worry, not all of us are here to gatekeep. Plus, you’re paying for a colo, so it’s basically a little rent house with utilities included just for your gear ![]()
Hifive back! And thanks! ![]()
Hi, well just this one server is drawing 300W.
And i have 6 + 2 switches and one firewall. thats around 2kw / hour.
12 HDDs, 40gig nic, sas expander, raid card.
I have only had one or two power glitches there over the last 10+ years. One required some manual touches to get the systems back up. They monitor your cabinet power and send nasty grams for ANY use over 12A (on a 15A breaker). I get the 80% rule, but that also allows sporadic peaks >12A, hence the non-continuous aspect.
As a personal rack, their NOC + remote hands is on par with most DC space my companies have used. Occasionally there are some DoS attacks against the HE.NET AS and some slowdowns are present, but their NOC never makes any of that a secret.
I funnel my home internet through HE.NET via wireguard, so comcast can’t inspect anything. Occasionally google starts to captcha, or cloudflare starts to get uppity, and for the most part, the HE.NET NOC has the contact info for those networks to try to work out why the entire HE.NET ip space is denylisted.
I have nothing but good things to say about HE.NET if you stay under 80% of your circuit capacity.
you can also negotiate 4 post square holes for your rack through the sales team when you first commit. Adding 4 post / square hole later is a PITA and a one time cost. If you do any standard server rails, you will want to upgrade to 4 post/square right away.
I am fully aware… which is precisely why I said the following in response to assuming rear mount was the way to go:
You do know it depends on the airflow configuration of the switch, right?
Haha thanks! I was ready to get bashed alittle for having it in dc so i was ready for it
I must say well it cost alittle bit to host it in a datacenter but so worth it for me personally, plus my wife wont kill me due to the noise!
after the comment above i asked chatgpt what it thought and it said the following:
“If you’re using a set of servers and network equipment for personal use, to learn and experiment, and the only thing that distinguishes it from a traditional “homelab” is its physical location, then in practice, it’s still a “homelab”. Choosing to house your equipment in a data center instead of your home for practical reasons (such as heat, power requirements, space, etc.) doesn’t change the purpose or essence of your lab environment.
So my answer would be: Yes, even if your lab environment is physically located in a data center, if its purpose is personal growth, learning, and experimentation, it can still be considered a “homelab”.” - Chatgpt
Maybe, or maybe not? They could be getting a sweet deal on the colo? Their best friend may own the data center and give him rack space for free??
I, too, can needlessly speculate based on no evidence.
