Is it time for the NHL to address the LTIR loophole?

With teams like Vegas and Toronto making a mockery of LTIR (Toronto to bury bad contracts, Vegas to gain a competitive advantage by being $10 mill over the cap in the playoffs) is it time for the league to look at making some changes?

I’d settle for them addressing the fucking awful streaming and TV deals. Apparently we expect too much.

It won’t change because every other team wants to be able to do the same thing.

Others have already told you in the comments but you using Toronto in your example just shows your lack of knowledge.

You could have used Chicago or Tampa who both won cups using LTIR to their advantage. But no, instead you use Toronto who is using it how it is meant to be used, for players with long term issues who aren’t going to pop up day 1 of the playoffs.

They need to fix the LTIR it’s a dumb af loop hole.

If anything if you player is on LTIR sign away. BUT if they come back healthy then their cap counts. And the management must balance the cap via who’s on the ice. Then they can’t double stack 10mill giys

lol Leafs would love a healthy Muzzin or fully healthy Klingberg. Also maybe 50% of your posts are about the Leafs. Obsessed much?

Dumbfuck post once again. The Leafs aren’t doing this to bury bad contracts. Literally there is nothing at all the Leafs need more than Jake Muzzin.

IMO, it’s long overdue. Just within the last 5 seasons I’m seeing it go from one team doing it to now at least 3 to 4 teams doing it. I can’t even begin to guess how many teams are gonna be over the cap at the start of the playoffs.

Yes, but only once Vegas is done abusing it because Kelly McCrimmon is so smart and every other GM is so dumb.

See y’all next year when this is posted!

I think Toronto is an example of LTIR working as intended. Muzzin isn’t a “bad contract”, he was performing well until he got too bruised up to play.

Similarly, Vegas is hardly holding Stone out of the lineup, considering that they aren’t too far from falling out of a playoff spot. If they could play him they would

The NHL will address it once Vancouver starts doing it. (Exhibit A: Luongo cap recapture penalty)

Betman doesn’t care as long as it’s one of his expansion teams in the desert :cactus:

There’s no cap in the playoffs so it’s impossible to be over the cap. If the league really thinks teams are doing this then the only solution is for the league to have more scrutiny over injuries.

Also, if players are going along with this, shame on them. I can’t imagine a player like Mark Stone agreeing to sit out a bunch of game if he’s not actually injured so his team can gain an advantage in the playoffs. But if he is, then he’s a piece of shit.

I genuinely curious how you think Toronto is abusing it. Our guys on LTIR are legitimately injuried as is everyone else on LTIR. Doctors evaluate them all the time and the league has cracked down hard on it.

To my knowledge we’ve never gone way over the cap in the playoffs like the lighting did with Kuch, the hawks did way back in the day or how Vegas is likely to this year.

I have no issue with people going on LTIR, it’s there to help the teams. The issue I have is that once the person comes back you shouldn’t be able to get the relief player(s) and the injuried player. To me that is against the spirit of competition.

I understand why the NHLPA and league don’t want this to happen but it feels really yucky to me.

Not until a Canadian Team benefits from it.

The salary cap isn’t about competitiveness, its about keeping salaries in check and tied to revenues. It happens to bring parity to the league but that wasn’t the goal when it was started.

Players don’t get paid in the playoffs, therefore there is no cap. The NHLPA has nothing to gain by pushing for this, owners have nothing to gain since it’ll pretty much kill deadline trades, only people who care are salty fans of teams who aren’t winning cups.

Classic dilemma unfolding here:

This guy clearly dislike the Leafs for using LTIR properly, probably complains that the sub talks to much about them.

Proceeds to talk about them.

Players who end the season on ltir can not play in playoffs. Problem solved.

It’s time for these posts to fuck off
