Is proton vpn private and safe

just wanted to know, like if i pirated with it can i expect to not get a dmca or some shit or a warning from my isp

Yes, you won’t receive anything if your VPN is bound to your client

Yes, it’s one of the better vpns out there and has a no logs policy so even if they wanted to sell you out (they don’t) they can’t. Just make sure to bind it to whatever client you’re using (I recommend qbitorrent). Also enabling the permanent kill switch wouldn’t hurt.

Proton vpn offers P2P services ONLY if you pay their monthly subscription, there is really no good free vpn that lets you torrent safely. Pay if you want to be safe.

Yup, completely safe. I’ve never had any issues and I use it with qBittorrent all the time.

Binding ProtonVPN to your torrent client ensures that your torrent traffic only goes through the VPN, providing an extra layer of security and privacy. Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1: Set Up ProtonVPN

  1. **Install ProtonVPN**:

    • Download and install ProtonVPN from the official website.

    • Log in with your credentials and connect to a server. For torrenting, it’s best to use servers optimized for P2P.

  2. **Enable Kill Switch** (Optional but recommended):

    • Open ProtonVPN and go to **Settings**.

    • Enable the **Kill Switch** feature, which will block all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops.

Step 2: Find the VPN Adapter’s IP Address

  1. **Connect to ProtonVPN**.

  2. **Open Command Prompt**:

    • Press `Win + R`, type `cmd`, and press Enter.
  3. **Find VPN Adapter’s IP**:

    • Type `ipconfig` and press Enter.

    • Look for the network adapter labeled as **ProtonVPN** or similar. Note down the `IPv4 Address` (it usually starts with 10.x.x.x).

Yes, I just used this and qbittorrent and bound them. Super easy if you follow the mega thread in r/piracy

In my opinion proton is way overpriced, and if you do torrenting with PF you have to change it every time manually. Windscribe gives you ephemeral PF for one week and peace of mind about that. Also proton speeds showed up really poorly comparing to WS.

None of them are. You are paying someone and trusting they totally won’t do anything with that data. VPNs are a scam in most circumstances.

If you’re extra paranoid of trackers from hackers or whatever.

If you’re on a windows, run a Linux VM then download your VPN+Qbit in that VM.

Then whatever you got downloaded, you can transfer Linux Qbit files that you downloaded for windows and transfer it with “Shared Folders” and it’ll be in your Windows HDD.

Edit: if you felt you did enough downloading, then destroy that VM and make another one, then Rinse and repeat.

Wdym by vpn is bound to client? I’m not intensively tech savvy, and while I can guess, I want to make sure I don’t misunderstand

What about recent cases in Spain they did shared recover email with LE ?

The no logs shit is basically false since EU laws require them to, this is what i heard from a Cyber Security engineer/consultant.

He inspected the Terms and conditions for most of the VPNs out there and alot of the “no logs” policy is dogshit besides MULLVAD VPN

Step 3: Bind Your Torrent Client to ProtonVPN

  1. Open Your Torrent Client:
    • This could be qBittorrent, uTorrent, or any other client that supports binding to a specific network interface.
  2. Access Network Settings:
    • For qBittorrent:
      • Go to Tools > Options > Advanced.
      • Find the setting Network Interface.
      • From the dropdown menu, select the network interface associated with ProtonVPN (the one you identified in Step 2).
    • For uTorrent/BitTorrent:
      • Go to Options > Preferences > Advanced > Network Interface.
      • Enter the interface name associated with ProtonVPN.
    • For Deluge:
      • Go to Edit > Preferences > Network Interface.
      • Enter the interface name associated with ProtonVPN.
  3. Save and Restart:
    • Save the settings and restart your torrent client.

You have to select proton vpn in the settings of your torrent client

A less tech-savvy answer:

In one of the settings in your torrent client (for example qBitTorrent), you set the client to use your vpn connection (known as binding).

What that means is that you can’t torrent, if your vpn is not running.

If your particular torrent client doesn’t let you set the connection, then it’s time to find one that does.

There is a sticky in this sub that explains this in much more detail.

I’ll admit I didn’t know about this so I had to look it up. It looks like this has to do with Proton Mail not Proton VPN so it’s not particularly relevant to this thread. But even then, Proton was ordered by the courts to give them information about some dude and all they could give was his recovery email. Nothing of substance was given because there’s no logs. If you’re paranoid just don’t use a recovery email.

No, this is not true. In Switzerland, it is possible for a VPN service to be no-logs, and Proton VPN is, as proved in independent audits, as well as in court. What makes Switzerland different, and possibly unique, is that within the current Swiss legal framework, Proton VPN also does not have forced logging obligations. So, a no-logs US VPN could for instance, get a NSL (National Security Letter) to start logging particular users, but that’s not possible in Switzerland. In addition to that, VPN is mostly impossible for law enforcement to ask for something reasonable, as there’s no “identity” for the traffic going out of our server. There’s practically no chance of law enforcement to know what account to ask for.

Step 4: Test the Configuration

  1. Check IP Address:
    • Visit a torrent IP checker website like ipleak.net or checkmytorrentip.com.
    • Download the test torrent file provided on these sites to verify that your torrent client is using the VPN’s IP address.
  2. Verify Kill Switch:
    • Disconnect ProtonVPN and ensure your torrent client stops all traffic if the kill switch is enabled.

Following these steps will bind your torrent client to ProtonVPN, ensuring all torrent traffic is routed through the VPN.
