Hello, so I’ve been using NordVPN (both app and the browser extension) for a while now, but I recently noticed something my browser (Microsoft edge) alerted me to. It said something along the lines of I had an extension that controls/monitors my internet browsing security/information, and when I pressed the option to get rid of it the browser extension was removed. Was edge just misreading the browser extension or is the BE actually unsafe?
EDIT: accidentally said bing instead of Microsoft edge
What they’re trying to tell you (all users) is that every extension theoretically (!!) can ‘see’ the things you do and websites you visit with your browser. And controlling the internet connection is what NordVPN does of course. It’s the nature of the app. That’s the whole point. Monitoring is theoretically possible too although NordVPN doesn’t keep logs.
Is a generic warning that you’d get with any type of VPN or ad-blocking extension, and probably others as well like auto-fill and password manager extensions.
With an ad-blocker for example, you are giving it permission to read and alter any website you visit because it needs to be able to see what is or isn’t an ad and block accordingly.
In the case of a VPN, all your browser traffic is flowing through the VPN, so they can see all the websites you visit, but they aren’t keeping any logs so it doesn’t matter anyway. Also, keep in mind that any VPN wouldn’t be able to actually see what you’re doing on any website you visit, as long as you’re visiting HTTPS websites only.
They should really start adding disclaimers to these warning messages to make it more clear, but people would probably just skim through them anyway and still end up asking someone lol
I don’t like having too many extensions in my browser, so I use the Nord desktop app, but that’s just my preference.
