I have a few friends connecting remotely that want to use Rokus to connect. However the only way to connect to my server is via a wireguard VPN. My initial thought is a roku will be out of luck but I want to make sure there isn’t something I’m missing. Some solution for adding a VPN to a roku or something? I don’t have a roku myself to experiment with.
I’d check and see if their routers supported wireguard and just set it through that.
Roku doesn’t have native VPN support, so you’d have to either do a point-to-point VPN via the remote router, or some other method separate from the Roku device. To quote the first result from Google “roku vpn”:
“Can I use a VPN on my Roku TV? No, you cannot use a VPN directly on your Roku TV because VPNs cannot be installed directly on any Roku device.”
The way to vpn Roku is via modem-based DNS proxy settings. That’s what everyone does. It is also possible to do it from a windows computer vpned wifi hotspot using a free program called Connectify.
I’ve looked into this but never done it, I’m pretty sure they can connect to your VPN from their Windows desktop and then share their connection by creating a wifi hotspot that the Roku can connect to. Let me know if that works because I plan to do that someday!
I don’t have experience with roku but could you not screen share to it. Not ideal but worth a crack
Something like this might do the trick for you: https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/all-wifi-devices/products/gl-mt300n-v2-mini-smart-router
I tested one and was not perfect, but very good for the price. Advertised throughput for WireGuard is good from memory (I wanted to set it up to access my Jellyfin via Nebula when we were traveling, which is more complicated than WireGuard on the version I had).
Obviously I am only helping you on the assumption that you are only sharing content you own all copyrights etc.
I suspect it’s not but I can check. He’s rather a ludite and I wanted to avoid having him get into his router.
that’s what I was afraid of. He may just be limited to watching on his phone or ipad… I think he does that most times anyway.
Thank you
He has no laptop. He’s got an iphone and an ipad.
I don’t know… I don’t have a roku OR an iphone like my friend does… he’s 45 miles away and is NOT a tech person. I’ve thought about getting him a … whatever apples equivelant of the chromecast is for that purpose.
