[META] A Warning to Hola Users

I can’t verify that Hola was the cause, but shortly after installing Hola and using it for a few days there was suddenly a payment from my bank acct to a Paypal acct.

I got everything taken care of with my bank and the transactions blocked, but the only thing that I can see related is that I was using Hola.

Possible security breach. Please speak up if I’m not the first this has happened to.

It’s been thoroughly established that Hola is a super shady system that you shouldn’t use.

Is this thread AstroTurf? I’d like to see some more information about your paypal transaction. How do you think installing Hola could have done what you described?

What the fuck is hola?

I’m using a private DNS and it works great for me!

Nope cause I don’t use dumb non safe browser ad ons. If something I wanna watch isn’t on Netflix I just search youtube or use primewire(which I’ve been using for over 5 years without a single issue).

I missed the memo, and since I first heard about it on here I figured others have too.

What should we use instead?

What about a VPN that you pay for? I have one at the moment and I like it but I do worry about the methods.

If they had hola on while using paypal or something, couldn’t the person that they’re being routed through run some sort of packet sniffer on the data being transmitted and get some of their info?

Whether or not Hola is related to OP’s situation Hola is bad and the company is terrible with fixing security-related issues.

It’s a simple to use and free VPN that lets websites think you’re in another country.

It lets you watch netflix from the UK or any other country which has different things available.

But yeah, not safe.

A global P2P proxy network, with which members can share their internet connection and in return are able to use the connection of others.

When I can’t buy something, I steal it.

Oh my god, you’re so cool. How can I be cool like you?

We try not to promote it here. We’re not going to tell people they can’t use it, or suggest it to each other in the comments. But, my stance is don’t use it, and this sub doesn’t support it. When it first came about people were almost demanding we include it on the side bar, but that thing is and has always has been sketchy as hell.

That is, without a doubt, the worst “security advisory” I have ever read. Not only does it not list any confirmed security vulnerabilities, the things that are listed are byproducts of having a P2P proxy network (I.e. by design).

Right… injecting javascript in webpages can be a security risk (just like regular advertisements are security risks), and it obviously isn’t evidence of great design, but it is not some extraordinary nefarious scheme that’s being pulled over users.

For what it’s worth, the founder of HOLA explains here what the javascript was doing. Injecting advertisements… they were trying to work out a monetization plan. So, I guess that part of Hola was as dangerous as airport WiFi.
