So… every time I activate both PIA and NextDNS (using the official GUI packages), the connection goes down. I tried “Use existing DNS” in PIA, but it seems it does not recognize the DNS configuration. Have anyone managed to make them work together in Windows?
EDIT: after playing around, I determined that NextDNS implemented thru YogaDNS seems to work well with PIA VPN in Windows. Kind of a sketchy workaround, but it answers my question.
I was unimpressed with the feedback here. I’m very well aware of the limitations of the VPN. I’m just stress testing some interesting configurations for my pleasure and curiosity. The true Internet related privacy is only possible by reducing or eliminating exposure to it. Everything else is a compromise!
The gui implements doh via a local VPN which is the problem. I am using yogaDNS and it works fine along with Nord VPN. I’m quite sure that there are other solutions as well. I think the CLI client would be good too. I’m sure that others will fill us in.
Good to know YogaDNS setup can work alongside PIA.
I didn’t try it, so I ended up setting up their plugin on my router, so now my whole LAN is running via my NextDNS and DoT (just in time of becoming a paid customer as those queries…boi, those pile up with a speed of light, only now I realize how much Samsung TV is calling home even if it is used just as a TV/cast).
I know a guy who works for the Samsung AD software division. He works on projects ultimately implemented through firmware in any connected Samsung made device. So… yeah! But Samsung are not the only ones. Everybody does it and they are fighting for the last piece of it.
Yep. Read that. Thanks. Here’s a quote from the “more cat pictures” version : In most circumstances, VPNs do very little to enhance your data security or privacy unless paired with other changes. Now, back to my question: How do I set up NextDNS over PIA VPN in Windows?
Not saying yogaDNS is sketchy (maybe it is, I dont know, that’s not the point for now). But implementing nextDNS though a third party software to make it work with a VPN configuration is an unnecessary complication. Yet, it’s the only way I managed to make it work in Windows. DOH would probably solve this, yes.
