Pi-hole Eero DHCP Setup Help

Looking for a step-by-step, ELI5 guide to setup pihole on Eero Pro mesh wifi. I have found various threads and posts, but many are over my head or unrelated to Eero

Background: I have used pihole for years prior to moving to Eero. My previous router was a Netgear Nighthawk. Basically I could start pihole in four steps.

  1. Install Raspian on raspberry pi.
  2. Install pihole.
  3. Navigate to pihole settings, DHCP settings, [✓] DHCP server enabled.
  4. Disable Netgear Nighthawk DHCP server feature in the router:
  • Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to router’s network.
  • Sign in as admin
  • Select ADVANCED > Setup > LAN Setup.
  • Clear the Use Router as DHCP Server check box.
  • Click the Apply button.

At this point, after disconnecting and reconnecting the computer and devices to wifi, I was blocking network wide [but not on the devices connected to a work or private VPN, understandably].

This is probably very basic stuff [possibly not even the corrected method], but it would be great for a pihole/Eero DHCP setup walkthrough. Thanks in advance!

If your VPNs don’t do split tunneling and force all traffic through the VPN, they can’t see your home devices right? Can you link the PiHole server when on VPN?

And Eero doesn’t come into play here. Seems you have it in bridge mode. So it’s not handling routing or DHCP. It’s just good quality WiFi.

Ok. So I have eero too. Here is your info

1- you can’t turn off dhcp on the Eero
2- you can’t set custom DNS on the eero.

So you have to workaround.
1- Turn the dhcp server on your Pihole.
2- change the dhcp on the eero to only 10 devices
3- set MAC address reservations for all 10.
4- make sure the Pihole is setup and working. Then reboot everything so then get new IPs from the Pihole.
