Basically, I am looking for a way to get my grandmother Polish TV. We tried dish but it doesn’t work well. I’m looking for a solution that will be easy for a 88 year old woman to work, so having VPNs and stuff would make it too complicated for her.
Is there anything available outside of dish?
There are a few options. The one that I have tested and is used by members of my family is called PolBox. There are a few ways of watching the service. It’s not cheap, and the “ease of use” is always down to the user. Some elders are much more proficient at tech gadgets than others. You have 2 options with PolBox.
They have an app you can download onto a streaming device such as an Amazon firestick or the Google Chromecast. ( I use it through the Firestick and can vouch for it working through that). Or you can choose the more traditional way. Get a a box with a remote. You will need to connect that box to the router via an ethernet cable and will need to teach your grandmother to scroll through the TV inputs until she reaches PolBox. Then to pick up the PolBox remote and operate the menus through that. The menus unfortunately are not intuitive. I have other family members that use the Box instead of doing what I’m doing and since it’s a shitty device most likely made in China will require the occasional unplugging from the power and plugging it back in whenever the service freezes.

Sling TV with the Polish Channels. I think it’s $30/month for the bigger package
TVP app allowed a lot of free viewing

If you go that route than there will be a few hurdles that you will have to jump through. The 1st issue I had is when I originally ordered the service. It seems like PolBox uses or maybe used a payment processing company in Romania and that country is automatically blocked by American credit card companies due to high corruption levels.
You will have to contact your CC and tell them that it’s a legit charge and try it again so they can let it through the 2nd time around. I only did this once like 4 years ago and it hasn’t been a problem since but potentially that is the 1st thing you may have to work through.
If you do the Firestick option then you will have to google on how to allow 3rd party apps to be installed on the stick. After that, best to write instructions step by step and print them out on how to start the service. Good luck.
I got a 3 day trial. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to install it on the firestick. Pretty good considering all the emails and instructions were in polish (I can’t read or speak polish).
