ProtonVPN not on Apple TV 4K and Chromecast with Google TV

HelloI would highly appreciate it, if there would be an app of ProtonVPN on both “Apple TV 4K” and “Google Chromecast with Google TV”. There are other VPN apps available on them, but I don’t want to subscribe another VPN service if I already have a ProtonVPN plan.So I am highly asking creating an app on both of them, as there are allready apps of ProtonVPN for iOS and Android. Thanks and regards

Unfortunately, Apple TV doesn’t support VPN software. However, you can install VPN on the WiFi router that your Apple TV is connected to. For more information, here’s our guide on how to install ProtonVPN on different routers (note that this will only work for routers that support OpenVPN as a client): https://protonvpn.com/support/installing-protonvpn-on-a-router/ If you are having issues, please contact our support team, who will be glad to help you: https://protonvpn.com/support-form

For Chromecast for Google TV, we also suggest setting up ProtonVPN on your router, and switching to “Allow LAN connections.” This will allow you to control your Chromecast from your Android device with ProtonVPN.

We’re actively working on officially supporting TV devices with streaming (i.e. AndroidTV), and will share all updates via our social channels. Stay tuned!

You can probably sideload the android app on chromecast, I do on my fire cube.

Many of us have asked for TV apps, and never get an answer.

The sound alternative is to leverage pfSense / OPNsense / untangle Firewall and use it to selectively route devices, such as your AppleTV, over their ProtonVPN interface

better off having a wifi router that is configured to connect to proton and then every device on that network is on the VPN, pfsense + Unifi AC PRO, and some VLANs and you’re good to go. You configure a wifi network on its own VLAN and then configure pfsense to route the traffic from that network over the VPN. They make it really easy to do.

Proton’s focus is on security and privacy. I doubt this is a high priority for them.

“There are other VPN apps available on them”

Details, please, in the case of the Apple TV. I’ve not found a VPN for it and would really like one. So, if you’ve found one, please post!

We’ve released the official Android TV app in beta yesterday! You can now protect your privacy while streaming and watching video content on any Android TV by installing the ProtonVPN app directly on your TV set (no need to sideload or install VPN on your router anymore). Available to Plus & Visionary users. More details here: https://protonvpn.com/blog/android-tv-app/

Important note: you need to opt-in to ProtonVPN beta on Google Play Store in order to be able to use the Android TV compatible version. After joining the beta program, you’ll have to wait +/-30 minutes before trying to download the ProtonVPN app for Android TV.

Feel free to give our AndroidTV app a try, and let us know what you think.

Update: The “allow LAN connections” in our AndroidTV app is enabled by default in our latest app version.

The issue is though, the main reason we use a VPN on TV devices (I use a Fire Cube 2), is to get around geo-locked content. So selecting the whole device to go through one country isn’t practical, we need to switch countries quickly, via remote control, from the actual device.

For example, to use The Roku channel I need to switch to USA etc…

The android app works perfectly, on TV devices BUT we need to use a Mouse Toggle type app to navigate properly. They could easily add a TV UI and a line of code that detects the screen resolution and outputs in either mobile or TV mode… so many apps already do this.

If they done the TV UI and put the app on the Amazon store, and Android TV stores… they would no doubt get more customers… they are losing out to IPvanish and SurfShark.

I change country so often I have it as a widget at top of screen: https://ibb.co/1MWKDYD

If they could go one further and add widgets to the app with country flags, so people using custom launchers can use a country flag as a quick connect, they would win the TV market.

In all honesty I’d just shop with a company that understands this, if my TV device was actually my main device. But I already use PVPN on my PC so not paying twice for a UI upgrade.

Sidenote: if there was a TV friendly OpenVPN android app, that would also solve the issue. But ProtonVPN are losing an easy to grab customer base by not having a TV friendly version on Amazon and Android TV stores… it’s minimal work, for a large potential gain.

Or they could just edit the UI of the android app slightly, to stop me having to use mouse toggle to navigate it in fire tv, and release it for both fire tv and android tv.

Many android apps these days have both mobile and tv mode, that is detected on loading.

My VPN use has very little to do with “privacy” other than keeping my public IP out of torrent swarms. I use it mainly to view geo-locked content. Us asking for a TV version of the app is not unreasonable.

It’s interesting how many people use a VPN but have no idea why they are doing so, other than “PrIvAcY”.
