PSA: Do NOT Trust IPVanish (Investigative Journalism)

Lifehacker is doing their annual 5 best vpn services

IPVanish, the logging VPN that nobody uses:

http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1fciy0/what_is_the_point_in_using_a_vpn_when_you_still/

Who requires your identity (utility bill, ID) when signing up:

Suddenly went from Last to First place. Was it because they tweeted? No, because IPVanish has no followers on Twitter:

Followers

IPVanish - 382 followers

Cyberghost - 1201 followers

PIA - 1575 followers

Torguard - 908 followers

What about retweets? IPVanish had none after several hours of posting. Cyberghost, PIA, and Torguard had plenty of retweets and favorites:

PIA - http://i.imgur.com/igGWUXn.png

Should you trust IPVanish?

NO

EDIT:

They slowed down after getting first place significantly, but it is still increasing with the same pattern:

Lifehacker’s traffic stats and the poll’s traffic stats should prove everything. They will investigate.

/u/blechniven seems to be a shill for IPVanish and other services that the IPVanish company offers like multiple usenet providers. I have saved his posts for reference incase he denies it.

We are Anonymous.

We are Legion.

We do not forgive.

We do not forget.

Expect us.

Anonymous is involved in what exactly? Voting in a fashion show? Ok…

Yeah no one uses IPvanish unless they like getting the account shutdown for DMCA.

Good work VPNPSA, it sure looks a bit shady to jump up that quick. Especially when IPvanish barely has any users.

This sort of thing is rampant in the VPN industry though. I would say 80% of most reviews of many VPN’s are fake and it is so painfully obvious.

Case and point: /u/blechniven

His post history reads like an IPvanish troll. No one has a hard on for a VPN provider without getting paid.

I can’t say whether or not IPVanish is worth my business. But I know that you are making a damning, sensationalist butt-hurt sounding claim without posting a shred of evidence as to whether or not their service favorably (or otherwise) compares to the competition.

Notice how fast Cyberghost jumps up too, from 96 to 664

I’ve been thinking about switching from VyperVPN to PIA for the last few months, mostly due to getting something a little cheaper. Does anyone here have concerns about VyperVPN and privacy? Should I just stick with them? I picked them up b/c they had servers in New Zealand primarily -does PIA have them there?

This sounds like a case of just overreaching policy on their part.

Fraud is rampant among VPN providers. Easily 30% of our signups are suspect. We have taken a lot of proprietary measures to limit that, but when we get transactions that look like they could be fraud, we ask users to verify their payment information.

Our usual procedure is a lot less intrusive however. We ask the person to take a picture of the card used to sign up, and cover all information except for the name on the card and the last 4 digits.

This allows us to verify that they actually possess the card, as most cards are stolen through phishing schemes online (most fraudsters are not photoshop experts).

It is easily over 95% fake reviews.

On top of that there are hired black hat PR firms that post fake reviews all over the place in places like Reddit.

Do not trust a review unless it is from someone you personally know.

As a co-founder of VikingVPN, I have received multiple offers from websites to post fake positive reviews in exchange for cash/bitcoins.

I just looked on PIAs webpage. The closest server to New Zealand looks like Hong Kong.

Investigative or just slamming to be a whiner? http://www.reddit.com/user/vpnpsa - oh look. 1 post.

Yes, I have 1 post because this is for showing people what does.

Cyberghost went up almost 600 votes in that time too…

These were real votes.

Your post history is interesting as well. I have saved it for future reference /u/blechniven

Is there even ONE website reviewing VPN providers that isn’t paid by the same VPN providers they review?

TF, GreyCoder and the dozens of VPN review websites are all paid by the same VPN providers they review.

Would like to see at least one impartial site doing reviews.

We’d better listen to her, she has 15k karma.

well I got a coupon from my usenet provider (Newshosting) some time ago and it was quite a bit cheaper than the home page price. So after asking around about VPNs I just bought it. And I’ll be honest, it works great for me and what I use it for. I did come here at one point to be part of the conversation and explain my experience because that’s what I thought this was for, but now it’s just all drown out and downvoted if you say anything other than the party line in this subreddit.
Unless you are swinging from the trees yelling “buy PIA! it blends, it cooks, it cleans your car!” welcome to downvotes.

“those were real votes” - O RLY? how would you know?

And feel free to archive my post history up your arse.

We did not pay Torrentfreak for their review of us.

Nor did we pay Freedomhacker.

Torrentfreak put their sponsors on the first page of the review at the top of the list so they were the most likely to be read, and at least disclosed the sponsorships. They quoted our responses verbatim and seemed impartial with anything they added about various sites.

But yeah, i don’t know of any completely impartial site doing reviews.

And this “getting the most retweets means you’re the best!” shit does not tell anyone anything.

1 post troll account uses my profile in his troll. I don’t have a case to make.

So your defence is an ad hominem attack? Why don’t you defend yourself against the content of the comment not the commenter.
