I am a paid subscriber. I noticed my VPN connection is VERY slow. I get 400mbps with my ISP. Speedtest shows I am getting 1.75mbps down and 5 mbps up when connected to Proton VPN. Is this normal? If not, what could be causing it, and how can I resolve it?
Same here. Crippling speeds over the last 2 days. Mine connects to the VA servers. yeterday was so bad I turned it off. Its not normally like this.
Yeah, this is getting unacceptable. It’s like using 56k dial up again, no matter if I choose ‘fastest’ or 'random. Doesn’t matter if I’m on desktop or mobile. Speeds have been absolutely terrible for the last couple months. When my subscription ends in like 6 months, I’m going elsewhere
(VA servers here)
I’ve been getting extremely slow speeds for a few weeks now. It’s barely useable anymore. I find myself disconnected more often now because of not being able to tolerate it anymore…I’m in the northeast US and it keeps connecting me to Texas servers and everything is so slow.
I’ve been reporting slow servers for months now and I’ve become convinced that nothing will change. Just part of the ProtonVPN experience now.
Been having the same issue for weeks. Chicago servers.
I appreciated the nostalgia of watching an image load line by line from the top down the first time. It got old after that.
Same issues, switched my router from all US to US-FL server and no change. Excluded my laptop, 400 Mbps, put it back on the VPN, 10 if that. Making me really consider if its worth paying for it anymore if its beyond mere servers
Can you do the following please?
If we do receive reports about servers performing poorly, we make sure to dig deeper and improve our infrastructure where needed. But for this, we need actionable bug reports which will provide us with adequate information so that we can pinpoint any issues with a particular server or network range, and act accordingly.
With that in mind, we would appreciate it if you contacted our support team through the ‘Report an Issue’ option in the app menu so we can help you troubleshoot further. If you’re experiencing connection issues with the servers themselves, rather than slow speeds, please also send us the error logs. This support article contains illustrated instructions on how to send us a bug report from our client on every OS: https://protonvpn.com/support/report-a-bug/.
When you send us a bug report, some of the general troubleshooting questions that our support team might ask are the following, so you can provide the information beforehand if you wish (note that we might ask additional questions depending on the specific case reported - the ones below will help for slow speed reports, but some of the information is also required for connection problem reports):
• Your current location (country) and which exact servers (i.e. CH#10) you’re experiencing this problem with?
• Have you tried connecting to servers with low server load near your location?
• Is there any type of anti-virus or firewall software running on your device? If so, which one?
• What kind of internet connection are you using (Home/work/school/public & wifi/ethernet/cellular data)?
• Your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
• Have you tried switching between the available connection protocols and then check if the issue persists (https://protonvpn.com/support/how-to-change-vpn-protocols/)? For instance, if you’re using the default Smart protocol, try switching to WireGuard, or maybe OpenVPN - UDP, to see if you get faster speeds.
• Do you have any downloading apps (like torrents) running in the background?
• What is your ISP connection speed and what would be the minimum speed that you expect to receive while using Proton VPN?
• Could you send us screenshots of https://speedtest.net while you are connected to our VPN vs. while you aren’t?
We also have a support article with some tips on increasing VPN speeds which you can check out here: https://protonvpn.com/support/increase-vpn-speeds/
Feel free to contact us. We’d love to try to help improve your experience with Proton VPN.
I went back to TorGuard VPN the other day. Still paying for Unlimited package because I need the rest of it, just a shame the VPN service is lacking and buggy in my experience.
Same here, it happens all the time. Hence why I googled this.
I had a business plan and my vpn speeds were horrible. Proton tried to speak to me as if I did nto understand anything about computers. Tried to blame it on my isp on the connections I was using. They finally admitted that they were congested and were working on setting new servers. That was over 1 1/2 years. ?? I was never crazy about their vpn and eco system all in one. Too similar to google and all your stuff readily available for three letter agencies all in one platform that is not anonymous since you pay with card last time I checked. Oh and also proton prohibits p2p traffic from some countries if I remember correctly

It would be amazing if there was a way to submit the same report on the website without having to do it through an app, as I run the VPN through a router and not individual devices.
Did you report it as previously asked in another thread?
