Since I have not seen people do any extensive test after the recent changes that got a lot of people reverted back to their original region, I wanted to do some on my own. That’s why I will be sharing my procedure and give updates on the well-being of my account.
First of all, my account is 8 years old, doesn’t have any restriction of any kind and has a little over 1000 games registered. Its region has never been changed before and it is using Steam Guard, linked to a phone number from a different region than Turkey.
The plan here is to make Steam believe I am genuinely residing in Turkey by keeping my VPN on 24/7 for 2 to 3 weeks when using Steam. Once the recent login history on my account starts showing a trend of exclusively Turkish connections, I will be changing the region of my account to Turkey. After that, I will wait another 2 weeks before purchasing stuff on the Steam store and see if my account gets reverted.
For the duration of the test, I will be using is PIA VPN, which, like I already mentioned, will stay on everytime I log into my Steam account in order to avoid any trace of my actual location in the log history. I will also be using PIA VPN on my phone if I ever need to confirm transactions on the mobile Steam app.
Additionally, I have logged out of every website that are affiliated to Steam on my browser, such as steamdb and the official Steam website, just to be safe.
Update 1: 18th of August, I have successfully changed my region to Turkey after spending a week without a single connection from my home country in the logs. I will now wait an extra week or two before purchasing games. Does anyone know whether it’s preferable to make a big purchase with lots of games at once or a multitude of small purchases ?
Update 2: 25th of August, my purchase went through flawlessly, here is what my cart looked like.
Update 3: 26th of August, I have been reverted back to Europe after trying to purchase FFXIV and Factorio. It is worth mentioning that my VPN has been active for the whole 2 weeks of my experiment (from 11th to 26th of August). Next time I’ll be trying Argentina but that’s probably not going to happen before a major sale.
Edit: I would like to mention that I had previously topped up my wallet using Steam cards (in euros) and market transactions (CSGO mostly), no additional transactions were made since I changed my account to Turkey.
