Stop Using Luna VPN

Luna VPN is kinda a recuring theme in this sub. Their most promintent (blessing and curse) feature was their use of a MITM proxy to preform ssl intereception to block ads. On one hand this allowed them to block ads on hulu/youtube (normally this is dificult to do at a dns level since these sites use the same domains for serving videos as ads meaning nuking the domain breaks the app). On the contrary it means they can also see the contents of the websites you browse.

Here is an example of bank info that could be seen. I used a free open source program called mitm proxy to get this (similar to the approach of luna vpn).

By the same token they could steal login credentials/moniter other apps in a similar fassion.

Now lets say you don’t care about your literal web contents being monitored by a shadey company, another reason not to use them is well their app is pretty bad at blocking ads now. After being pulled from the app store and google play once the new version removes the mitm capabilites meaning it doens’t block hulu or youtube ads anymore (its only good feature).

As per alternatives on ios and android I would strongly consider using nextdns. They do not sell data like luna and don’t have a mitm proxy like luna vpn (trusted by chrome and firefox). Adguard is also another good pick though they give you a little less control on the filters/whitlists you can use.

On android you have a few more options from private dns to local blocking (a great video by howtomen):

Finally regarding youtube and hulu. The best way to block youtube ads is by using a modded client.

For ios use uYouPlus sideloaded via altstore or sidestore. Main benefits is in addition to blocking ads uYouPlus allows background video playback, downloading videos offline, and blocking baked in ads via sponsor block.

On Android use revanced:

As per hulu I made a old thread tutorial on how to block it on android (sorry ios users your out luck here) using firefox or kiwi (fork of chrome):

What if you just turn it off when your using sites with sensitive information? Don’t most sites gather and sell your data anyway? Feel free to correct me if I’m missing something.

But next dns do not block youtube app ads any other option

Luna Adblock is malware

most sites now sells your data including google, this post makes no sense, you can just turn the vpn off when you’re visiting sites with sensitive information it’s not that difficult

umm guys the YouTube++ app or uYouplus is taken down by google and I clicked on your link they don’t have the ipa download link anymore due to googles request so guys your going to have to use lunar for now

Really a company wants to sell my data.

How outrageous, that they are doing this, where they get this evil idea from. Surely not from EVERY OTHER APP/WEBSITE EVER.

Luna blocks YouTube ads. What are you talking about. NextDNS and simmaler apps didn’t block any ads.

Plenty of free as well as really cheap options for VPNs, Luna has been confirmed to be a bad choice, agree with the post.

That’s exactly what I do. I have a regular security VPN that’s always on; when I want to watch YT, I turn that one off and use Luna AB. Does this work “absolutely”? I do not know. But it seems too.

uYou through AltStote

Scanned with malwarebytes. Are yall being paid to say this?

Be quiet, tell me in what world would you use an app that has capabilities to view banking info? That’s not a good enough excuse, try again buddy.

You have to build the uyouplus ipa yourself now through GitHub actions. I have the latest decrypted 19.12.3 YouTube ipa and built it with uyou.

you don’t make any sense lmao

But how do I create the ipa?

You know what I mean, no need to be dumbfounded.
