Thoughts on lifetime vpn subscription

I came across this today. Been thinking about getting vpn and this seems too good to be true. I know lifetime doesn’t really mean much in this day and age but still… thoughts?

One quick though about lifetime - it’s the lifetime of said product/company, not your lifetime.

I don’t know a lot about VPNs or what exactly to look for in a good one but something doesn’t seem right about that…

“Restrictions: up to 2 simultaneous connections” - that’s ridiculous. In their system requirements, they say “Router”… Well, what brands? How do you set it up? Through OpenVPN? Because only a few routers support that. If you can’t set it up directly on your router (which may be the case), you would need to set it up on every device - and, well, two won’t be enough. NordVPN gives you six. Surfshark unlimited.

They say they have “350 high-speed servers around the globe” - that’s not very many at all. So, what speeds are you going to be getting…? For NordVPN, for example, they have 1655 in the US alone and 260 in Australia (see https://nordvpn.com/servers/). Surfshark has 1040 or so.

Can you trial it first? Any decent provider includes a trial period. If not, and it doesn’t work, you can’t set it up on your devices, it drops out or you get slow speeds, you might just be throwing your money away. You want to be able to make sure it works on your devices and that the interface is easy for you to operate at a very minimum.

Also, is it reputable? What company is this? Even NordVPN got hacked (I think). I don’t know - if I’m trusting a company with my interest browsing history and banking details, I want to make sure they’re trustworthy.

I don’t know what features you need exactly… So maybe compare the list of features with NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Pure VPN, SurfShark, etc. and see how it compares. My feeling is it won’t stack up. And I’d want more detailed information than what I see on that page. Maybe something like this will help: https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/10-things-look-for-when-buying-vpn/

By the way, I paid AU$17.67 after cash back for a 2 year Surfshark subscription. It’s a little buggy but pretty good; not as good as NordVPN when I trialled it but cheaper so I went with it. I don’t know - do some research, trial a few, trial that one and then decide.

Just some things to think about…

I feel like everyone and their mother has a VPN product these days. On their website they indicate there is indeed a trial period that you can test it out on. From the reviews of the VPN that I briefly looked at, it seems like it’s an OK VPN but not the best by any means. I would at very least do the trial before purchasing a “lifetime” subscription - even for $15.

In my opinion, with VPNs you get what you pay for. Which is why free VPNs are about as useful as an ad blocker that has ads in it. They have to make money somehow. If you are serious about buying a VPN, I would do as much research as possible and really understand what you are looking for in a VPN and why.

I’m not saying that the most expensive VPN is the best automatically, but the better VPNs do charge a decent amount more. Because they have more features and more servers. For me, speed in downloading is the biggest thing for me in a VPN. If it makes my download speeds significantly slower, I don’t want it. And from what I am reading this VPN is pretty meh on speeds. Despite their name. Just my two cents.

Edit: Typos

I bought a ‘lifetime’ vpn; found out later ‘lifetime’ is defined at exactly 5 years. For $15 your exposure is low but expect some creative definitions.

that’s right. obviously don’t want to throw money at a company that’s not going to be around for long.
