Hi. Reading many different opinions regarding Threat Protection (mainly for the ad blocker) and Dedicated IP to try and avoid captcha. I’ve read on this subreddit that the Dedicated IP doesn’t work, that it also blocks streaming services like Netflix and I’ve read that the ad blocker in Threat Protection Pro makes websites block the users. I assume things regarding this change from month to month. What’s the latest on these two features? Bonus question: if subscribing to 1-year plan, is it possible to cancel and change to a 2-year plan with the same email adress later to take advantage to free months and from what I can see a cheaper price for the dedicated IP?
Don’t buy Nord if you don’t intend to use the main VPN service, there are better alternatives if you want to have an ad blocker and a custom IP
I haven’t used/bought NordVPN’s dedicated IP feature before, but I have tested out NordVPN Threat Protection Pro & Lite, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. I actually much preferred the lite version over the pro as it was less “glitchy” and did the job of blocking ads on my iPhone & iPad by changing my DNS (can set it to either “VPN Only” or “Always”, depending on your preference). However, the only ads it blocked were website-based and some other apps (ex. annoying game ads), however it didn’t block any ads on Youtube.
Now, Threat Protection Pro is a different story because it is only available on MacOS and Windows (I believe), with a host of interesting, yet underdeveloped features (it mimics an Anti-Virus). It has a lot of potential but just isn’t the best right now as it only remains on when the app is open in the background; turns off if you use certain VPN protocols (in my case, Obfuscated OpenVPN UDP) even if the connection is through NordVPN; randomly breaks websites by not loading the page and will only work again if the page is refreshed; and is much easier to install on your computer than it is to remove since it installs a system extension that can’t just be deleted in normal instances. Also, for some odd reason, the Pro version on MacOS lacks any DNS filtering as it actual disabled by DNS-over-HTTPS feature on my browser and just replaced it with my ISP’s DNS, not even one from NordVPN like with the Lite version.
Overall, if you are looking for something that would block ads, Threat Protection Pro & Lite both work for blocking most website ads, but the Pro version seems a bit underdeveloped and finicky.
This. Or r/ControlD if you like products that are updated.
The ad blocker is not important but I figured that if the upgrade from Basic to Plus is that few cents then it might be worth it

Thank you for the reply. Threat Protection Pro is available if you download NordVPN app through an APK link from their chat support.
Upgrading to plus is worth it but I feel like if you intend to use Nord ONLY for Threat Protection and the dedicated IP is kind of a waste. Websites, regardless of whether you’re using Threat Protection or a different solution, can detect if you use adblocker. It’s not just with Nord. I’ve never tried the dedicated IP because I don’t need it but in my experience Nord doesn’t have any issues with most websites with the basic VPN connection they offer, including Netflix. There are some that get blocked but those are sites that block all VPNs in general, beyond Nord.
You’re better off using something like NextDNS with custom filter lists that achieve the same thing as Threat Protection, but on a DNS base level, and if you want a dedicated IP, you can search for other solutions. Nord is excellent in both aspects and sure you can go for it but if you’re concerned about malware and ads, uBlock Origin will be your new best friend. You don’t exclusively need Nord for it. And if you’re worried about captchas, that happens with every VPN but Nord barely had any
It’s not much more for the introductory pricing, but moving from NordVPN Basic to NordVPN Plus is an extra $70 per year (from $99.48 to $166.68) when it renews.
If you were thinking of paying that much for an ad-blocker and password manager anyway then it’s a reasonable deal. Otherwise you might want to consider sticking with the Basic plan.
