Surfshark → Netflix has been down for a few weeks, along with all of the other major vpns. They are aware of the issue, but there is no indication of when / if it will be fixed anytime soon. Their chat support will not be of much help, as they just go through a standard list of troubleshooting steps and then say ‘we will continue working on it from our end’ after those steps do not work. From what I can see from this subreddit, along with info from Japanese language communities that use vpns specifically to connect to Japan Netflix, there are currently no VPNs that are consistently working.
The majority of the Japan netflix catalog is the same when viewing from Hong Kong. The multi-hop singapore->hong kong VPN connection on surfshark is currently working for Netflix.
