VPN and Firewall for Home Network

Hey, I would like to setup a VPN and a Firewall for my home network for free.

I have set up a TP link Deco Mesh network which is connected to the basic ISP router.

I have more than 20 devices connected to my home network including IP cameras and home office computers.

Any suggestions how can I implement it for free?

Why do you think you need a vpn? Are you trying to get access to your home network from outside or waste money on a commercial vpn provider who claims to “hide your ip address”?

You can setup an OpenVPN server in a VM or cheap PC and setup VPN that way. You can also setup a PFsense firewall for free or put it in a VM.

+1 for PFSense and Wireguard

Pfsense is decent and free. Paired with openvpn

Your isp router is already a firewall.

www.firewalla.com it’s not free, but it is a one-time purchase and an excellent product.

I have a home office with 4 computers and employees generally download some 3rd party softwares for work. These softwares have adware and trojans which can easily penetrate my network.

I would recommend Wireguard, easier to setup.

I’m afraid not! Here in India, they give basic Nokia/Huawei routers (generally) which are pretty useless other than their basic operation.

A firewall will not prevent machines in the local network from affecting each other.

and wg performs faster

Huawei, yikes. Of course they’re giving those out for free.

The processes used to encode and decode transmitted data are quite different between OpenVPN and WireGuard…so no, it’s not “basically all the same software.”

Wireguard is faster.
