VPN blocked by my internet provider- possible workarounds? USB tethering doesnt work 100%

Hi,

My internet provider blocks VPN. When I connect with mobile hotspot through my phone or in my gf place there are no problems, when I try to connect to VPN from my place it disconnects my internet connection.

Ive found a workaround- I connect with my phone using mobile data, start VPN, change to my home wi-fi and the vpn is still running, then I start usb tethering and it seems to be working fine enough. But some of my file-sharing programs dont work properly and it is a hussle to set it up.

Any possible workarounds of this? It is the only internet provider available in my building, no 4G yet.

see if you can change the port number of the VPN to see if they are just blocking certain port numbers

If you can try port 443 (TLS/SSL HTTPS traffic) or port 80 (HTTP traffic) to see if the VPN will work then.

In most European places it’s illegal to force somebody to use a specific ISP. That’s a monopoly after all.
I expect that’s why the other person said change ISP. We don’t realise how looking we are sometimes

You could try calling them and saying you need vpn for work to do your job, might be worth a shot

Change ISP. Why would you want to stick with an ISP that blocks the use of a VPN?

Alternatively run your own VPN, or find a provider that will run a VPN, on unlikely-to-be-blocked ports like 80 or 443.

But mostly, get away from that ISP.

Check the recommended VPNs over at:

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/

and search for “shadowsocks” or “bridge”. A few VPNs support it. Shadowsocks was made specifically to get past ISPs who block VPNs. It will make your traffic look like normal web browsing traffic, but in fact it will be going through the VPN.

Could you be so kind to point in a direction of some sensible quide of how to do it?

It is the only internet provider available in my building

Did you even read the OP?

Ask your VPN provider if they support OpenVPN obfuscation/ SSTP/ OpenConnect/ Softether.

Clearly not properly. My apologies. But the other suggestions are sound.
