Does anyone else have the issue of ProtonVPN disconnecting whenever you turn off your screen, then re-connecting when you next open an app?
I can see that it does this as my connection displays as 4G when I turn on my screen and then changed to VPN/Wi-Fi. My internet connection will also sometimes take a few seconds to work. This is kind of annoying as I’d previously used NordVPN with no issues.
Yes, it’s been this way since version 2.7.0
It’s been reported ever since but they haven’t said when they’ll fix this.
There are other comment threads on here (search for iOS WiFi disconnects), Proton support has all but refused to acknowledge this issue and continues to blame Apple for any faults with their application when as you indicated other VPN providers apps are not exhibiting similar behavior. The other provider I use does not have the issue, connection persists most of the time without issues. Personally I really like Proton and think they take the security of their product seriously which is far more than I can say about NordVPN, but I do agree they have some bugs to fix and their support team leaves something to be desired. When I opened a ticket they just blamed Apple and sent me to the same article they have used for years to blame Apple.
Yes, same issues, same unhelpful comments from proton customer service. Really bad - and it just can‘t be that it’s all apples fault as various other vpns I have used do not have this flaw.
This happened for me when i am connected using wireguard but if u change it any other protocol the vpn didn’t disconnect when the screen is off.
Yes, and it drives me crazy.
I’ve also noticed recently that many of the servers in my area are at capacity a lot of the time. So if I leave my phone for a while, chances are good I’ll come back and have to switch servers because the one I was connected to loaded up while I was gone. It happens probably 5-10 times a day.
Have you tried disconnecting the kill switch? that seemed to help me.
Ok, I will report this too.
So nothing we can do about it then? I’ve been wanting to have my VPN turned on all the time as their speeds are pretty good. But this kind of makes it not practical at all to do that.
Also if you don’t mind me asking, what is worse security-wise about NordVPN vs ProtonVPN?
Thanks for mentioning this. We’ve flagged the occurrence to our team, particularly with regard to Wireguard, and we will further look into the possibilities of improving the current behavior.
I don’t know anything about which protocol means so would be hesitant to do that. Will have to look them up.
It happens mainly with wireguard, that much is true. OPENVPN works definitely good but has probs when changing networks and it kills the battery. Ikev2 works okay - far less discs that with WG, but killswitch problems and disconnects happen every now and then nonetheless.
But hey - works okay for me at the moment; so thanks for your idea.
Do you use the free or the paid version?
No but it’s not really a great solution if you want to make sure your IP address is leaked
. But anywho, I have settled with just using a VPN now and then rather than all day, as I’ve encountered too many issues.
iirc this is an apple bug that never got fixed. Can you try wireguard or OpenVPN to see if that fixes it?
Nope, nothing you can do about it and so far Proton refuses to acknowledge it as being a bug in their own software and instead places the blame on Apple.
I may have misstated the security piece, they use the same protocols and cipher suites. My issues are more focused around their (Nord) lack of transparency when a breach occurs and their insanely aggressive marketing team who pays off review sites. It’s difficult to find a truly unbiased review for VPN providers, hence my link below to privacy guides, imo it’s the best unbiased review out there at the moment.
At the end of the day we are all putting our blind trust in a company, at the moment I trust Proton but they also have their pitfalls (bad customer service, unfixed annoyances in their software such as this one).
With a quick search on this subreddit you could find a lot about. It was discussed many times.
As others have said, Google it. They have had breaches where they didn’t inform their users. Here’s one to start with (granted this one is from another VPN provider, but Google it, there is lots of info out there): https://blog.windscribe.com/ukrainian-server-seizure-a-commentary-and-state-of-the-industry-e71e8d205b26/
Nord also has an extremely aggressive marketing campaign, ever notice how all ‘review’ sites list the same few VPN’s as the ‘best’ VPN? It’s not because they are the best, they are paying off the reviewers.

If Nord works well for you, by all means stick with them but I personally refuse to put my trust in a company that gets their product out there by paying people off and refuses to be transparent when breaches occur. If I am going to part with my hard earned cash it will be to a well respected company who puts their focus on making sure I am as protected as possible when I use their product.
Here is another useful link if you ever want to look for a good alternative to Nord.
