I use ProtonVPN on my iPhone. I also use the Personal Hotspot capability often to enable my other devices to be online. Recently I noticed that the connected devices are not actually routed through the VPN. I spoke to support and they confirmed, this is expected behavior.
I’m looking to understand why? Doesn’t the phone act as a router and as it is connected to the VPN all connected devices should be too?
I think it isolates the hotspot as a separate network. I know ATT is able to track how much data I use on my phone versus how much data I use on the hotspot from other devices.
I actually noticed this as well the other week. It’s quite silly, you’d think the VPN would apply to the entire OS. Guess it’s just a limitation with iOS…
You could use a mobile router with a vpn and then repeater you hotspot signal. I love using a GL-iNet router for such things.
It seems this is actually an OS limitation as some have mentioned that VPN on hotspot is posible on Android.
Yes, some custom ROMs have this option.
