Merry Christmas!
Wondering if this is possible and how to go about it…
I’m in Canada with Telus home internet which use a T3200M modem.
I want to use a VPN to route traffic only while watching on my Roku TV - not on my entire network (speeds would be too slow as I’d be using a foreign country server).
I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 I’m not using.
Can I connect that to my home internet somehow and install a VPN on that, and my TV connects to the Netgear?
Or is a smart DNS like Control D better? I’m not sure whether any other DNS services allow you to choose the country.
Yes you can, you can keep all your other devices connected to your previous router with no VPN and connect only devices you want running VPN to the Nighthawk. The Nighthawk will be “double-NAT”, but that shouldn’t be a problem for the use you describe.
You would need policy based routing which I doubt the R7000 has by default – it could if you replace its software with DD-WRT or similar. Another way would be put the TV on its own (v)LAN whose router (gateway) is VPN capable, e.g., a PC running IPfire, OPNsense, or similar.
Might want to consult Google for this…. Too many options to solve the problem… good luck
Thank you. Do you know of any guides/links to follow to do what you’re suggesting?
The R7000 has Tomato (I think that’s the name) firmware on it.

Thoughts on a guide or the right words to search for?
Just connect your Nighthawk to your primary router with an Ethernet cable, and get the VPN settings (probably OpenVPN) from your VPN provider. Setup a different wifi network on your Nighthawk like “myhome_vpn” and connect only the devices you want to that.
That (nearly) makes sense!
Is it as easy as connecting the Nighthawk to the primary router or do I need to configure any settings or put in specific modes (bridge or something) etc.? Clearly I’ve not done this before. Appreciate your help!
