Bonjour mes amis ! Désolé mais my question is going to be En anglais.
So, a French loving guy like me (culture and languagewise) is always looking for more and better French media to consume. So I’m thinking like Netflix, Amazon Prime, movies on Google Play and movies you can buy on Youtube et cetera, if I would use a VPN and buy movies and such, will there always be subtitles or even dubbs (in French of course) available? This way I will learn more French. Or even better, more access to French movies for that matter. Like now for instance, the only option available (without VPN) is if I buy movies on Google and then I can actually put French subtitles on English speaking movies, which is great!.
But my problem and my question here really is, if I use VPN will I get more access to buy movies, watch/stream tv series and whatnot in French? Because I live in Sweden right now, and first of all, all the movies and what not on all the big streaming serveces are really bad. Maybe it’s just not my taste but the licences they buy are horrible. And also there is no way for me to put anything in French. Not even the subtitles! Purée!!! Ca pue! Et bon. Voila.
Thanks for help!
I use NordVPN from the US and can access the French Netflix, which has way more French content than the US Netflix. I can also access M6 and TF1 replay (2 of the main French channels)
Windscribe has free servers that usually work with Netflix (until sometimes they don’t), and work almost every time with prime and all other streaming services. I personally mostly use it for france.tv which has great selection of series and films and all of them are with cc french subtitles, very useful for us learners. There’s a catch though, the free plan has usually 10 gb of data, so it runs out pretty quickly. But I’ve found a work around for this.
- Connect to the windscribe france server
- open france.tv website, or any other website, click on the tv series, video, or film you wanna watch
- let the video play for a couple of seconds
- hit pause, disconnect the VPN server
- play again, without using up the GB of the free plan
This method works for almost every streaming service, prime included. Except for netflix, but here you can actually use the GB during a month, and then they reset it.
Not too sure about using a VPN but have you tried looking up classic french movies? Some of the older ones are available for free online, and honestly they’re wayyyyy better than the lazy and pretentious corporate stuff released today, especially if you enjoy the language and culture. Movies by Michel Audiard for example, they’re amazing.
That said, I don’t know about google or amazon but a while back I was able to get German Netflix and US Netflix with a VPN, so maybe it would work.
In the UK don’t need VPN for a reasonable selection of stuff on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Arte. If you like non-fiction content you should explore Arte and Radio France more.
VPN hasn’t enabled me to get full access to TV5Monde stuff (just the limited selection already available here) or to FranceTV. Following in case anyone knows about accessing those. In particular there are some shows on FranceTV I’d really like to watch.
I use Viva, a buy as you want. You need a vpn but i use proton vpn and thats all you need (its free). It shows the netherlands as an option which works. Im not sure if you need a vpn for being sweden, but viva has movies both in french and occasionally in english ( usually foregn movies have english dubs, french movies dont often have english dubs)
Which vpn u use , i try brave And tunnelbear, nordvpn And they dont work for m6
