What does this built in VPN do? Does it have all the functions of a proper paid VPN?

When you have VPNs that you pay for configured on your device then the widget just simply connects/disconnect it.

For example, I have 2 VPNs: NordVPN and one that is for my WiFi mesh system. Nord is my default so if I used this widget and select it then it would connect to VPN via NordVPN. If you don’t have any VPNs configured then no need to have this widget there.

There is no “built in” VPN on iPhone. It’ll let you hook it up to a corporate VPN (for connecting to work) or a paid VPN service (for privacy and changing country etc) but there’s nothing built in.

The widget you circled just lets you connect or disconnect from whatever VPN service you have set up.

What are the functions of a “proper paid VPN” besides the basic VPN functions?

The iOS VPN feature does not provide any free servers for you to connect to. It’s simply the VPN client to be used for your own server or potentially paid services.

The VPN status widget tells you if you’re connected to a VPN, either one of the built in types, or a commercial provider. You’d use the built-in ones for a business, or your home. They’re common/generic.

All VPN does the same thing, takes your internet traffic and send it over the VPN to somewhere else. No more, no less. Commercial or business or personal, all the same.

Does it work for netflix and whatnot, can you choose a specific country?

I don’t understand anything else you just said tbh.

Basically if you have a paid vpn this is the setting to turn it on or off other than that it does nothing

If you are not talking about icloud relay, iPhone just provides inbuilt client/framework to connect to VPN service. You don’t get any service when you get ian Phone. you have to configure your own server or third party servier.

Ok, that’s still pretty handy. The button saves me opening the VPN app every time.

Yeah it’s handy but that is it’s only use, might be cool to see Apple add a VPN to their iCloud+ service even if it only offered a few countries
