I have an hp laptop (windows 11) and i noticed today that ExpressVPN is installed and running almost all the time…
- what is this
- do i need it?
- what happens if i uninstall it?
(i don’t think i installed this, i didn’t know if it came with the computer?)
i don’t know ANYTHING about computers and i just don’t want to break my laptop by guessing

Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC.

If you’re thinking about ExpressVPN, consider what you really need from a VPN. Personally, I use NordVPN because it’s straightforward and reliable, but ExpressVPN is also solid. VPNs help keep your online activity private, which is handy if you’re worried about hackers or tracking.
ExpressVPN is known for its speed and ease of use, so if those are priorities for you, it’s worth checking out. If you just want basic privacy without too much fuss, this company has been the best for me. But, there are other good options out there too.
It’s a VPN (Virtual Private Network) program that allows you to mask your IP/location with different servers around the world.
Handy for many different things, but a lot of people just use it to access different countries Netflix libraries.
If you never paid for an account with them you probably aren’t actually connected through the VPN though but it’ll just be running in the background anyway.
You can remove it without anything bad happening.
ExpressVPN is a paid subscription VPN service that securely tunnels your internet traffic through a remote server (operated by ExpressVPN) before it reaches its destination.
Among other things, this makes it more difficult (near impossible) for people on your local network (or whatever Wi-Fi network you are connected to) to monitor your web browsing activity or hijack your web browsing sessions. The VPN service can also effectively hide your IP address and location from the websites you visit, and make you appear to be in a different country/location of your choosing.
If you’re using ExpressVPN, you should be aware of this because it would require you pay a subscription fee. Most likely it’s installed, but not actively running. If it is running and connected, then either somehow you automatically got set up with a free trial, or someone else set the VPN up for you and you’re using their account.
If you follow the instructions for uninstalling posted on the ExpressVPN website and that doesn’t work, you can try using this utility from Microsoft which can help you remove unwanted programs that are difficult to uninstall through conventional means.
