Hey all, I am on the search for a VPN that works with Linux and I am looking for recommendations.
Okay, maybe not directly a Linux question but related to it.
So far I have had Mullvad VPN and NordVPN.
Mullvad was great overall. Loved all the features and what not but was not crazy with being blocked on streaming sites like Amazon. Also some connections are shadow banned on some sites like twitch and kick. The system tray was also a hit or miss as it almost never appeared.
NordVPN is good too especially with speeds but my gripes with it is no split tunneling for things that block it like overwatch 2 servers. Also the no GUI kinda sucked even though I had no problem with using it in the terminal. Then there is also unable to get preferred region setup for auto connect so I would get put into other countries randomly on boot.
So besides those two, what would you recommend? I am wanting to try them out one month at a time.
Putting in a word for Mullvad. Honest pricing and an overall superb experience. No BS with e-mail accounts and such. In RAM-servers also guarantee no logs, which has also been verified by police razzias.
Started with openVPN, then stood up a WireGuard server, and might stand an openVPN server back up as a backup to apply obfuscation for random wifi that blocks WG.
It’s protocol is v2ray and it is because almost all other protocols in my country are banned ( using VPN is illegal in Iran and many foreign service s are banned too )
I prefer ExpressVPN. It’s cross platform, so it works for my entire family at home and away on any device. It’s faster than most with no less features and it doesn’t try to be more than what it is; Just a damn good VPN. It’s more expensive than some, but I’ve never had a server fail to access streaming media in/from any country I’ve been to and their servers are fast.
Wireguard on my own vps and a home raspberry pi. I also have a protonvon account. My dad borrowed out his paid vpn to me, but barely use it, as wireguard has been very hekpfulk for me. Might use paid proton if torrrent is allowed. But dutch goverment is semi ok with torrenting, i paid for pirating by taxes already
None as I trust noone. VPN as an idea is good but there is no difference between a vpn and an isp in terms of privacy. You are still forced to trust someone else.
Windscribe works well and allows me to manage my business VPN profiles pretty easy as well. The UI is not my favorite, but generally don’t have to go into it much.
I’ve used Proton, Nord and Private Internet access and by far the best speeds and most stable has been PIA. I tried the others because I got deals on them but I always end up going back to PIA. Plus it has the best Linux support of the three as well. There is an official GUI and everything. Also split tunneling, though I haven’t tested it personally.
