Xfinity slowing down downloads

So tonight I noticed downloads from Newshosting were around 1.6MBs, I pay for 1250 Mbs unlimited plan, so out of interest I turned on the VPN to test and my download jumped to 50MBs for one set of downloads then another same thing happened was getting aroudn 1.2Mbs then turned on the VPN and it jumped to 100MBs.

Really frustrating that I pay for the highest speed product and they are artificially slowing down my speed just for this one connection.

I assume they have an automated system that sees traffic from one area and throttles it. Any one else experience this with Xfinity. May have to add an additional host to see if that helps.

Are you using ssl on default port 563 on userner server, if yes then try changing to port 443 to see if it helps.

I see some are confusing units of measurement.

MBps of MBs is 1 megabyte per second. Megabyte is a typical unit of digital storage.

A Megabyte has eight megabits, as one byte is composed of eight bits.

mbps is one megabit, the typical unit of bandwidth.

So, the 1200mbps Comcast connection is 150MBps.

I initially found it confusing that when data is in transit we use a different unit of measurement that’s eight times larger than the unit of storage when the data is stored.

However it does make since as with network overhead, and as data’s repeated for TCP to get reliable data transmission we measure in bits as it will take more bits to move the data then there are bits in the file.

Some fancy FTP clients can actually let you see this loss as they may report the total bandwidth they are consuming in megabits per second as well as the file transfer rate in megabytes per second. If you look at the end summary and do some math by dividing the megabytes by 8 you’ll notice that there was more megabits transferred then the megabyte size of the file.

Just tested my xfinity and I’m over 100MBps.

they are artificially slowing down my speed

That’s not necessarily the case. Could be congestion, badly peered any number of reasons really.

Does suck alright.

Make sure your using TLS 443 though, and multiple streams. If they are deliberately slowing you that’s all you can really do to obfuscate it. And/or change ISP or Usenet provider.

im on xfinity and im getting 1.51 Gbps on a 1200 plan with a 2.5Gb switch and their over provisioning on port 443 with newshosting and eweka

yeah they do traffic shaping, there are ways around it

Recently, as in the last week or so, my downloads from Newshosting have slowed quite a bit. I am on AT&T fiber 1 gig, and I normally get around 20 to 25 MBs. For the last week or so, my maximum download speed has been under 10 MBs, averaging more like 6.

My Newshosting account is set to renew in about 2 weeks for $99.99, so I decided to jump on the EasyNews 1 year deal for $35.88. I then setup NZBGet to use Easynews, and proceeded to download several large files at around 40 to 50 MBs. In all cases using SSL.

I’m not sure how much of this difference is attributable to Newshosting vs Easynews, or to the software used (Newshosting.exe vs NZBGet), or to my ISP (which didn’t change, but might be discriminating). But I’ll take the faster speeds, and the lower cost (at least for the first year).

Comcast throttling? While we were under Net neutrality companies were not allowed to throttle, yet Comcast did and got a huge fine which then explains why they keep increasing prices. Once Net neutrality got voted out there is NO penalty and ISP’s can gather every little bit of info, slow you down etc, and not face any penalty.

It was surprising when so many sat back and let them remove the valued Net neutrality when it was up for a vote back in 2017. So expect it to happen more and more and with every USA ISP.

Weird I am having the same issue with Xfinity. Tried both ports and have the same speeds. I get over gigabit on a regular speedtest but Usenet download speeds are 25MB/s for each of my providers.

This is most likely the cause. I had the same issue recently. My provider doesn’t offer SSL on 443 but they do on 80 so I went with that and boom, full speed downloads again!

I will try this thanks.

True, though the free vpn from my host fixes it so not a big deal. I have changed the port but nothing has downloaded since doing it. Will see, I have turned off the VPN for now to see how the speeds go. I would agree with congestion but turning on the vpn I went from 1.5 to 100.

Probably a better than even chance Xfinity is throttling. The difference between VPN and non-VPN is pretty compelling.

I’ve been tempted to add an additional server, may still try it. So far the VPN from Newshosting has solved all my issues.

That is not entirely true!! Yes, Congress did repeal Net neutrality authority from the FCC. Many Blue states I am not trying to make a political statement just being honest enacted their own net neutrality laws. On The federal level the FTC has net neutrality rules the FTC does not have the same enforcement powers of the FCC, but it is something.

You should try a VPN, the one I tried I had it just tunnel for SABnzbd and the speed increased significantly.

Well 25MBs is about 210Mbs out of your 1000Mbs, which is slower but not terrible, I’d be ok with that speed. They also seem to throttle in the evenings more at least here. I haven’t had a chance to test since changing the port.

Worst case for me the VPN comes with newshosting so I’ll just keep that hopping around the US for downloading.

Tried 443 still super slow. VPN solves the speed issue. I get 80 - 100MB/s on VPN so it will stay. I can have just SAB use it and tout the rest normally. I’ll switch the VPN server weekly.

The VPN may cause a different route that is avoiding some congestion. But I agree that is is definitely suspicious and nothing I would put past a major ISP.
