this is a screencap of the settings (name/password cropped out) that are on. I choose connect to the closest US region to me. My client is is the latest version of qbittorent and the only changes I’ve made with the qb settings are related to seeding and how many things things can download at the same time.
In the current setup am I good to go or should I change something?
You want to go into the advanced settings on qbittorrent and set it to only use the PIA VPN for the downloading. Some times the connection to PIA will drop and the torrent client will continue to down load in the open. The setting is called “Network Interface (requires restart)”, click the drop down and select Which ever adapter is the "TAP-Driver.
That seems to be right. Main things are enabling Kill Switch and DNS Leak settings.
Make sure you have port forwarding on and you point your torrent client to the port that appears in the tooltip when you hover over the PIA icon in the menubar. This will ensure you can upload (seed) and people will prioritize your connection.
Hello It looks like everything has been touched on here. Port forwarding will potentially optimize torrent performance. Using the killswitch feature will protect your security in case the worst happens.
Please note:
How do I ensure my security and privacy when downloading?
Isn’t that basically what the kill switch does though? Like when I 1st turned that option on I then left the region I choose in the option and my taskbar had the non internet icon even though the internet at my house worked fine. Is there really a difference or not?
Start downloading something and the shut the PIA app off (right click, exit), see if the torrent is still downloading; if it is that’s a problem.
If the qbittorrent continues to download then the program is not using the VPN-Adapter and is downloading in the open. You don’t want this, this leads to DMCA complaints, and happened to me when I first set up my downloading rig.
Not saying to not use the "Kill Switch and DNS leak options, this suggestion is just an extra set towards not letting your ISP know what your doing.
Want to go a step further set up the proxy settings for qbitorrent a well. This will most likely slow your downloads down though.
oh wow you are right. i figured the killswitch would have carried over but I guess it does makes sense how it is turned off when the VPN stops. thanks for the help!
The kill switch isn’t for when PIA itself closes, it is supposed to kill the connection if the PIA VPN connection drops while you are running PIA. So it normally works fine for what it was designed for.
I suppose if you expect the PIA application to constantly close/crash itself then yeah maybe the kill switch won’t be much use. That’s not something that happens too often in my experience, but maybe things will be different on your end.
I and a friend in Austin had issues where the PIA client would loose connection and the app stayed Green. It looked like it was connected, but it wasn’t the DMCA noticed i received from my ISP and the DMCA that my friend received from Google where kind of a big red flag that something wasn’t working right.
The app was running so bad i had to roll back the TAP driver and the app itself to get it to work right. It doesn’t happen to often, but it does happen. And once is enough to get that damn letter.
I use this option as a last ditch Hail Mary so to speak.
