Android killswitch gone?

I’ve re-installed the app with no success, has it been removed? I wont be using it without a killswitch as I’ve had previous issues with PIA

With the latest release of our Android app, we have replaced the Killswitch with the built in Android feature, providing a more reliable alternative. In settings, tap “Block Connections Without VPN” under the Blocking section. This will give an explanation of the new process as well as a link to your Android settings to enable Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN.

Upon tapping Open Android Settings, tap the Advanced tab > VPN > Tap the gear icon next to PIA VPN > Toggle Always-on VPN > Toggle Block connections without VPN. With the second option turned on, you won’t have an internet connection until the VPN successfully connects.

If you run into any issues or need additional assistance, please open a support ticket with our Helpdesk - https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/new-ticket. Please make the subject, “ATTN:SMR”.

In settings you have an option “VPN always on” that redirects to Android VPN settings where you can stop connections when there’s no VPN.

The Android killswitch option overrules the PIA setting to allow access to the LAN. On my Samsung Galaxy S9 and S10 access to the LAN is not working anymore, now already for a year! This was always working great when PIA used their own killswitch.

I can’t find this feature on huawei?
So no more kill switch? we are expected to leave vpn on all day even with poor connections?

Always on VPN is a relatively new feature for Android, many people own older phones (or ones from China) that offer no support after hitting the market. I’ve had a relatively decent phone performance-wise for 3 years (same specs as S8) but recently replaced it thankfully. It was shipped with Android 6 and never seen an update.

This is very common for the vast majority of phones shipped from China, even many relatively new phones are stuck with Android 8 or lower. These phones do not support Always-on VPN but the killswitch was their only option and it worked reasonably well for folks with no options.

Why remove a legacy feature for no point? It wasn’t replaced with anything as Always on VPN has been around or awhile now. If folks wished to use that they would have from the start. Anyone with a phone stuck on Android 8 or less now has absolutely no killswitch at all. I know the current option is better, and always has been but you removed the killswitch for 1000’s of customers undoubtedly for (what seems to be) absolutely no reason.

Given the size of the customer base, there will surely by 1000’s of customers who have 0 options now in regards to a killswitch. What was the purpose behind removing it without adding a workaround for these customers?

I don’t want my vpn to be always on? It would effect battery life and Internet speeds.

The button was there a few days ago?

Forgot about this thread, moved from PIA as they had bad reviews and had been bought by a dodgy company or something.

I apologize, but we do not support Huawei devices as they often use a non-standard version of the Android OS.

Exactly and also I’m on android 9 and no always on vpn. They also advertise a killswitch on there android app etc unless they have changed it in the last day or so, this is obviously very misleading - I really don’t think they know what they are doing tbh. This is very worrying and I hope they fix this soon.

I hope they give people refunds as I’m too scared to use without killswitch. I’ve had many a problem with ip leakage with PIA in the past to excuse this feature - the service has rendered itself useless to any Huawei user.

Loool but you literally had a kill switch on huawei 2 days ago smh?

I’m personally indifferent to the change (as I upgraded a few weeks back), but I know this is a feature many depend on, and I can relate as it was my only option since I started using PIA 6-7 years ago. It doesn’t directly affect me beyond me having to go into the settings every time and turn “Always-on VPN” on then off when I’m done.

A needless annoyance, but they seemed to have removed a legacy feature for no other reason than just because.I had a Le Eco phone with no “Always-on VPN” support the change seems stupid as all it accomplished was removing a single line from the settings.

It will undoubtedly affect a chunk of their userbase, given the slow progression with mobile phones over the years, not offering much each new release. Folks are keeping their phones longer these last two years than ever before … this will penalize customers for no real reason unless they release some information stating the killswitch was not sufficient and gave a false sense of security.

oh damn that response from support is devastating. was the killswitch on android so ineffective that they decided to change their own killswitch option and just use androids inbuilt options?
And lets say you want to go back to the previous android app version of PIA where the killswitch worked. Can you do that on android? It wont be in the playstore thats for sure.

I apologize for the confusion, the Killswitch was removed from our program in the recent update because the Always-on VPN feature is more reliable. Not all Huawei devices have Always-on VPN, but as I said, we do not support those devices.

If the Always-on VPN feature is not in your OS, you will not be able to use the Killswitch functionality. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you tell me its a bad company just wanne know what source you use :stuck_out_tongue: bcs its now my main VPN also xd

Lol, it was all over the internet so you will have to do your own research bud. Put it this way, I left them with a two year sub remaining.

Lots of FUD and chicken littles on the internet, who parrot other chicken littles without actually doing the research. In short, don’t worry about it. When somebody makes claims and then tells you to do your own research, that should be your clue.

I wasnt really worrying yet haha, and I indeed did my own research and only found that its located in an 5 eye country, still using it, but thanks for the extra info
