I’ve been looking this up, and just realized all the porn I watched on my home wifi, maybe if my older brother or parents decided they wanted to find out what I do on the internet, would there be a way for them to find out?
And if yes, is there a way I can fix this now and prevent it?
I’ve checked into our modem and it’s a old one, and nothing to see in status, no logs (I think), only some basic DNS status info.
But I wanna make sure they can never find out the porn I watched all these years lol, it would be a big deal to them
FYI, incognito/private browsing only stops your computer from storing data, your router and ISP can still see the info going through as http/https. Unless you VPN it, and https will only see the website (not the individual kinks) then your router and ISP can totally see your porn history.
Whether or not your ISP allows your parents to see that kind of history is another question, they might not ever store it for very long, but theoretically they could.
Well, they could sniff your pc traffic, or log dns entries (assuming you for some reason used their dns server), or just see your history, the last one would be the easiest one to see, but also the easiest to hide (just clearing the history).
In the case of the first one you can use a VPN (but then you might be inquired for the reason to use the VPN).
On the second case they would be suspicious if you changed your DNS.
So… yeah, as they maybe will not bother to see wtf you are doing on your computer you should be fine
Depends on what their technical skill level is. With shitty WIFI routers there’s really not much logging but they could certainly do something like point your DNS at OpenDNS and log it that way. But most people, even people in the technical industry probably don’t know about tools like that.
The other thing is if they installed some covert cyber nanny type software to track you.
Are either of your parents Network administrators? If not, probably not something you have to worry about.
If I were so inclined I could capture all the traffic on my home network and show up with logs in hand screaming about the terrible stuff I find. Meh.
I think the pool of people who can do it, and are interested in doing it is pretty small.
Even most businesses simply do it for liability or HR reasons. They don’t give a damn unless there is a reason to, like the FBI comes asking about John from accounting, or FAR more commonly, Suzy in HR is looking to find a ‘solid reason’ to fire Jim for cause.
Are you more concerned that they find out that you do watch porn, or what type or porn it is?
Because if the latter, it might be a blessing in disguise; they could custom-tailor your next birthday present based on their new knowledge of your predilections. Win-win.
Fool proof way - get a VPN service (like NordVPN), install another browser (if your default browser is firefox, install chrome) in a non-standard location under another name. Delete that browser from your startmenu. Setup the browser to ALWAYS clear everything (cache, history, passwords, everything) on exit. ALWAYS use your VPN connection and the 2nd browser for your porn viewing and unless your parents work for the NSA you’ll never be outed. Happy fapping.
I remember worrying that my parents would find the Hustler magazines I had stashed in my closet. (I didn’t hide them under the bed because that’s where I found my dad’s Playboys.) Ah, sweet bird of youth. How quickly you flew.
I believe Opera has a built in VPN service, you may want to look.
Mind you unless you built the VPN tunnel then whoever the VPN provider is can see what you’re doing. Whether this is something that concerns you is completely up to you.
As others stated even if found out the repercussions are probably low, however, I understand your POV.
If I were you, these would be my procedures.
1: Windows 10 has a multi desktop feature, populate 1 with regular items, set your second desktop as your private desktop, don’t teach your family about the multi desktop feature.
2:use a VPN, likely the opera one would be sufficient, otherwise a free VPN should suffice
3: always open an incognito window and always close it
4: Never forget to lock the door and have an escape plan ready
