Coatimundi in my yard in Phoenix, help!

Do I need to do anything? Call anyone? I don’t want someone’s dog to attack it.

I snuck up and got a better photo.

Unless it seems sick or rabid, just leave it alone and it will go away by itself.

If it approaches you, either aggressively or calmly, it may be rabid. In that case, get in the house and call fish and game.

In all my years living in Arizona, I have never once seen a coatimundi

Like a raccoon and a monkey had a baby

Those things are smart.

It’s probably casing your house, figuring out your schedule and patterns, sizing up your home security. It’ll steal some Amazon packages off your porch and gradually get more brazen and more elaborate in its heists. It might go through your trash and steal your identity from a pre-approved credit card and a utility stub. It might persuade you to buy some bitcoin or goad you into buying a stake in a mining claim down in Chile.

You should definitely take basic steps like securing your trash, putting sticks in your windows, replacing the screws on your door locks with 3” structural screws, freezing your credit, setting up a VPN, and ensuring you have a difficult and unique password on your Wi-Fi network.

What a handsome fella. As I understand it there’s a troop of 20-30 that live in the riparian area along Wet Beaver Creek in the Verde Valley. I caught site of one back in November. Initially I thought it was a feral cat since all I saw was a long hooked tail. After a few “here kitty, kitties”, the creature took a vertical leap into the trees, almost like a monkey or an ape. Took me a minute but, lo and behold a Coati!
I keep my eyes open for them, but so far no luck.

Looks like they can and do defend themselves against potential predators pretty well

Never heard of them. Awesome! I want one

I saw one in Peppersauce Cave once. They hide!

What part of town are you in?

Wow, extremely fortunate for you to see this. Are you near any natural areas?

If you’re close to a river bottom or a wash you would be surprised by the amount of animals that inhabited the area when times are plentiful.

Another 1st timer here, never seen one before in a decade of living in the Valley.

SO lucky! Having visits of wildlife in your garden. Enjoy!

That’s pretty cool I didn’t even know that it existed. It kinda looks like a badger in the face

WHAT! I am soooo jealous.

Check out that tail!

Wow! Super special to see one.
