FanControl blocked by Norton after new experience update
Uninstall Norton that’s the problem…
You have malware. There’s good news - it’s easy to get rid of. The malware goes by the name “Norton” uninstall using Revo Uninstaller (free) and cleanup any debris.
I’m having this issue too, yet it seems no one wants to help cos it’s cool to just say Fuck Norton.
Is anyone willing to actually help???
Norton is a virus. Windows’ built in security is more than enough, free, has common updates, has real time protection and also some other features such as controlled folder access.
Windows security has been more than enough for me and billions of other people. You are no exception.
Weird, the virus is flagging other apps as viruses.
I feel you should learn to debloat before setting fan curves
- Running Norton
Well, there’s yer problem.
But seriously, Norton is just bad. Delete it ASAP.
Hi all,
I have been using FanControl on Windows 11 with Norton for a long time.
Recently, Norton introduced a “new experience” app update. This morning when the computer was restarted, I was presented with the warning dialog from Norton that it blocked FanControl. I am able to work around it by disabling “Block vulnerable kernel drivers”, but I am trying to see if I can an exclusion only for FanControl so that I can keep the setting turned on for other malware, but I couldn’t find the FanControl.sys file anywhere, not even at the path that the Norton dialog shows.
Any ideas?
You shouldn’t be running Norton at all.
For everyone here, if you actually take the time to look into it, it is actually a legitimate security concern in the library that FanControl uses. There is a CVE about it.
So if Norton catching it is being an annoyance to you, then good luck with your computing.
Also, please learn to answer the question asked.
I’ve been a software developer for 20+ years. I know Norton is not the best, or even that great, it was still better than Defender when I migrated to it. Every year my subscription ends, I reasses. I have zero performance issues with Norton and I can turn off all marketing pop ups.
To add an exception open Norton, open settings, click the App permissions tab then scroll download through you programs list and select Fan Control. It will show the path to your fan control program next to the Fan Control name. Once the program is added you do not need to unblock any of the settings.
Thanks to this post I could fix it! It’s a shame that it took A GOOD WHILE for someone with more than 2 braincells to respond without saying something Norton related, when it literally isn’t the main subject lol
Because Norton is the virus/malware. Uninstall that shit. Windows Defender should be enough.
Like everyone is saying Norton is junk. Windows defender that’s built in is a way better option.
Not sure if me working in IT gives any weight to my comment from your perspective, but I would say get rid of Norton & run Malwarebytes free in conjunction with Windows Defender. & set up a scan schedule for 2-3 times a week.
Free Windows Defender + Free OpenDNS account using their DNS servers in your network configuration(s) + Ad-Blocker in your browser(s) like Ublock Origin = Great Free protection that is lite on resources
Never never use Norton. That crap of a software makes more problems than anything. Just like gigabyte control center.
I love reddits hate for Norton
I feel like it’s a bunch of kids in here.
