I am not sure it was the update, but the Fi VPN on my P7P has been flawless until that update. Now, it is turned off, and greyed out with the message that “Google Fi’s VPN is not available on this device”. I have rebooted the phone, and Fi support keeps telling me to turn on the VPN in the Fi app, despite that the exact problem is that the VPN toggle in the app is off and disabled.
If there is a small g in the vpn icon then it is the old legacy app. Go to Settings>Network & Internet> VPN and forget the legacy vpn. The new Fi app has a new vpn and can be used instead.
Thanks. I tried those suggestions, without any change. What finally fixed it was wiping the data and cache of the Fi app, and going through a quick “finish activating” process. then the VPN toggle was no longer greyed out and I have been able to enable it.
In the Fi app. They had me check the system app “Google Connectivity services” which was working fine. Now they offer no solution other than a factory reset
Nope. I have Nord and Duck Duck Go’s VPNs on the phone, but have used Fi’s vpn instead for over a year. I leave those others turned off. They are still turned off.
Thanks for your help… I will give that a shot. If that fails, I think we are just going to switch carriers after taking a monthlong international trip next month. Fi has been fabulous while we were abroad, but just hasn’t been worth the hassles back home.
Sadly, that did not work. I removed them both, rebooted. Then I tried to remove the Fi app, which I cannot do on a P7P apparently. I disabled it, force stopped it and rebooted. No change.
FYI, as a last ditch effort, I wiped the data and cache from the Fi app. That did it. When I opened the Fi app, it told me it needed to “finish activating”, which it did quickly. Then the VPN toggle was no longer greyed out and could be enabled.
Fi support, which I chatted with for close to an hour before posting here, never made this suggestion. Other than having me confirm that “Google connectivity services” was working, they only asked me (repeatedly) to turn on the VPN. The exact problem, of course, was that I could not do that and wanted to. When the rep finally understood the issue, they just suggested factory resetting the phone. Not good.
Thanks for sharing! I’m having the same problem on my Pixel 5.
What does it mean to “finish activating” again after wiping the data and cache? Is it just setting up the Fi app again or does it affect the Fi connection (i.e., restart the billing cycle or something)?
