How can I add a vpn to a router?

I know that it’s possible, but I find the process kinda overwhelming. Also, could I use this to trick my devices into thinking they are in another country? I know how to use vpn’s for one device, but a router vpn is new to me. Any help would be much appreciated.

You’ll need a router that supports VPN. Not sure which routers you looked at, but in general you’ll need to sign up for a VPN service (unless a friend or family can host a VPN server for you). Then you need to enter your login credentials on the router to make the VPN connection. For example, https://www.pcwrt.com/2020/07/how-to-setup-windscribe-vpn-on-the-pcwrt-router-wireguard/.

And yes, if the router VPN connection terminates in another country, your device will appear as if it’s in that country.

FYI - review models very carefully for capability.
While my stock-router did not support VPN capabilities out of box, I was able to install Open-WRT - https://openwrt.org/ - and configure it for use with a VPN - PIA / Private Internet Access.

This was successful, but because of the overhead for the router to process that data for the entire house, I did lose some bandwidth/speed - from 500Mbps to 300Mbps.

I’m sure a higher end router would perform better, however this was eye-opening to me. In the end, I chose to use proxy and a DNS solution (providing international streaming access), but your mileage may vary.

Take care, and good luck!

All right! Seems like I’d have to buy a new router. Thanks a lot!
