I am out of the country this weekend and I wanted to watch an NFL game on my Apple TV. Is there a way to set up a VPN so I can watch it on my directv app? This European country doesn’t have the nfl at any bar and I’d also like to sit in the hotel room to watch
Try tailscale. It is free and it works amazingly.
I use Windscribe, always rock solid and they finally made a tv app with a very nice and easy to use UI
Nord VPN works on Apple TV 4K it’s always on for me, no issues whatsoever
I used Surfshark for watching British TV in the US. Works really well.
You could also use a travel router that can connect to VPN and route all of your international travel.
Don’t be surprised if adding a VPN doesn’t work. Most apps can tell if you’re using a VPN and tell you to turn it off. Spectrum app recently started blocking Nord VPN addresses.
There are VPNs on the App Store; Nord, Surfshark, Proton, Express, etc
Apple TV 4K newbie here. I had no idea that this was even a thing.
So you all are saying that we can use and watch our AppleTV remotely? From out of the house? Does that turn on the AppleTV?
Does that also turn on the attached TV? And if so, does it show on that TV what you are watching remotely?
I thought the output of the AppleTV went to the HDMI port. Is this feature leveraging Apple’s mirroring technolgy?
The VPN would have to be more than just country switching VPN to make it appear that I am using a US ISP for content licensing. Right? Those are on the WAN side.
We are talking a VPN where it appears that my remote computer is plugged into my local LAN, just like at home. The content is streamed through the AppleTV device. If overseas, I would not see any international content, such as a different Netflix library.
Question. Why go though all this trouble if you could just install a native DirectTV iOS or MacOS app? Is this because content is not allowed to be streamed outside of the US? Then if that is the case, then just get a simple WAN side VPN to tunnel to a U.S. IP address so it appears that you are in the U.S.
I use NordVPN on my Apple TV and have no problems other than some apps blocking known VPN IPs. I also have a GL.inet box which can route me back to my router - a private VPN. On most devices I use the Wireguard client app but for devices lacking these apps (Apple TV has got one but requires payment) I can use this box to route their traffic through my VPN, making it appear as if I’m at home.
More generally I’m moving towards ‘self-hosted’ content using Plex as a solution to all issues relating to location or availability. That doesn’t help with live TV but I only watch sports and the news love which have a million and one ways to watch. Primarily I’ll use Apple TV apps but sometimes, if I experience problems, plugging my laptop in to the TV is the best solution.

Google “Apple TV VPN”
Amazing thank you so much
Same for me! One of the reasons I bought an Apple TV !
I would add don’t waste your time on a free VPN for holiday. Free does not guarantee quality of service and you don’t want to be frustrated on vacation. Nord is worth a couple bucks for peace of mind. I use nord at home on everything on my iPhone and wife and child’s. same price for up to 10 devices plus many features. I am not affiliated with Nord, I am an Apple engineer managing Macs remotely in Enterprise so I want quality, reliability and resilience. Hope this helps
Nord and Netflix on the other hand…
I just started using a GL.iNet travel router and man, that thing is a swiss army knife of routers! I use the MAC address spoofing method.
Even in a hotel? How would that work?
I use Surfshark, and I can only watch spectrum on my desktop browser, then I connect via hdmi if I wanna watch it on my tv because AirPlay displays just a black screen. However, all my other streaming apps (MAX, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, Netflix, Prime Video, Kanopy, Hoopla, Tubi) work fine on VPN, even DIRECTV Stream.
Do you have any experience with them? Do you recommend one?
